The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is offering prescribed fire corps crew member positions in Alexandria, LA from Jan 9 - Apr 28, 2023. Four crew members will work under a crew leader to assist with prescribed burns working with the U.S. Forest Service. When conditions are not ideal for burning, members will assist the partner with other projects including vegetation removal, fire line preparation, equipment maintenance, and other work duties. In addition, members will receive job training, personal development, and natural resource management skills while working with these partners.
By accepting this position, you are committing to train for and pass the arduous pack test, which is a requirement of the program. This includes walking 3 miles with a 45-pound weighted vest in under 45 minutes. Members that do not pass the pack test will be dismissed from the program.
In addition, prescribed burning is condition-dependent and members may be required to work long hours and/or weekends depending on direction from the partner. Members will not work more than 80 hours over a two week period.

- Fire Training (Red Card, S-130, S-190)
- Medical training + CPR
- Chainsaw Training (S-212) - Tentative
Compensation includes:
- $600/week living allowance, depending on placement site
- A one-time $650 travel allowance
- Meals (during work days) and housing
- Eligibility for an AmeriCorps education award ($1,718.25)
- Eligibility for a Public Land Corps Certificate for Noncompetitive Hiring Status
Note - If enrolling in AmeriCorps, it is SCA’s policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared results prior to the position’s start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position’s start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.
