Experience:
Required:
Sufficient proficiency in the target language to teach foundation and upper-division courses. NOTE: Evidence of proficiency for non-native speakers of the target language may be required.
Sufficient proficiency in ASL and English to:
Teach the target language effectively to English-speaking students
Counsel and motivate students
Benefit from professional development workshops
Communicate professionally with peers, supervisors, students and people outside the University.
NOTE: Evidence of written proficiency for non-native speakers of English may be required.
Willingness to receive additional training and professional development in the field of language pedagogy
Working proficiency in computer-based software, including Microsoft Office and internet applications
Ability to learn and successfully use Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as BYU’s Learning Suite, Canvas, and video software
Preferred:
Previous experience teaching ASL
Successful experience teaching the target language to speakers of other languages
An adequate understanding of Second Language Education theory, and ASL-teaching pedagogy to develop curriculum materials and to plan lesson activities in languages where commercially published textbooks and instructional materials are often unavailable
Knowledge of language-proficiency assessment criteria and the testing procedures needed to prepare and administer language tests assign grades accurately and fairly
Duties/Expectations:
Teach one or more undergraduate language courses as assigned by the Center for Language Studies, in-person.
Meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide supplemental instruction and guidance on course content
Participate in professional development training workshops and respond to recommendations for improvement
Write a course syllabus and set up course materials on the BYU Learning Suite and/or Canvas platform
Respond promptly and professionally to communications and assignments from the Center for Language Studies
