Office of Research facilitates the creation of new knowledge and the development of innovative solutions by supporting research across the sciences, arts, and humanities that enhances the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and spurs economic growth.
The Office of Research, and its staff, are responsible for central research administration, oversight of research policy and compliance, and internal research development programs. The Office is part of Academic Affairs, and includes the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of Undergraduate Research, as well as several research centers.

Job Summary
The Research Development Specialist (RDS) will be responsible for advising and assisting faculty in the research, planning, development, writing, and submission of scientific/technical, scholarly, and public service grant and contract proposals to secure extramural funding. This position will provide funding opportunity identification and research support, proposal development, and faculty development programming across the university. The position may also be responsible for management of internal award programs. The candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse work force. The position will provide timely and direct customer service to researchers.
Job Responsibilities
- Search for federal and non-federal grant opportunities that match faculty research interests via online databases and other sources
- Develop and disseminate research funding opportunities listservs to faculty researchers
- Analyze requests for proposals for a wide range of federal and non-federal organizations
- Review, edit, and format proposals and related documents for accuracy, completeness, stylistic consistency, logic, compliance with sponsor requirements, and competitive positioning
- Assist in the development of large and complex grant proposals
- Develop and deliver training programs to faculty on grantsmanship, finding funding opportunities, federal and non-federal sponsors, and other topics as requested
- Keep abreast of grant programs and policies across federal agencies
- Research and write content and assist in the development of the Office of Research/Office of Sponsored Programs communications
- Contribute to the delivery and management of internal award programs

- Demonstrated experience in proposal writing, editing, and development and/or marketing communications in an academic, non-profit, healthcare, or business-to-business environment
- Advanced degree, particularly in Business, Communications, English, or Journalism, Information Studies, or in the science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) disciplines
- Familiarity with administering, conducting, and/or managing research projects
