Job Description

Opened in September 2013, VGV draws students statewide by blind lottery. In its first four years of existence, VGV posted the highest gains of any of the state’s high schools in the assessed content areas of ELA, math, and science and consistently outperformed its sending urban school districts. VGV has averaged a 98 to 100% graduation rate and a 100% college acceptance rate to schools including: Johns Hopkins, MIT, Xavier, and Wheaton.

VGV is the first RI school designed from Day 1 to be a competency-based, personalized blended learning model. It’s “competency-based” in that students only progress through their lessons after demonstrating proficiency. VGV has a highly successful “dual enrollment” program whereby students, in their fourth year, can attend a local college and take courses for college credit. It is very common for VGV students to graduate having already earned 9 to 12 college credits. There is an opportunity for high achieving VGV students to complete high school in three years.

Employer Description

Located in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, directly across from the Johnson & Wales University main campus, 225 students along with the faculty and staff of the Village Green Charter High School (a.k.a. VGV) have been pioneering the school of the future—advancing individualized education and family choice by maximizing technology, creating community, reshaping teaching, and redefining school. Opened in September 2013, VGV draws students statewide by blind lottery. Students attend school every day with VGV’s Rhode Island certified teachers helping students progress through their high school program of study. VGV teacher’s role is now part data analyst and part skill gap interventionist as they support students maneuvering and progressing through the rigorous Common Core aligned Edgenuity e-courseware and High-Quality Curriculums. Blended learning is a combination with Learning Centers and classroom where students’ classes include virtual and traditional instruction. In small classrooms where the teacher has the luxury of instructing a smaller group of 14 to 16 students at a time who have the same skill gap and are motivated to learn a certain skill because it’s halting their progress, teachers can employ true differentiation and progress monitoring.
