The Student Health Center (SHC) at the George Washington University (GW) is a multidisciplinary, integrated student healthcare service that provides confidential, student-centered care in an accessible, safe, culturally sensitive, and supportive environment. The SHC seeks to promote healthy lifestyle choices and to holistically support the physical and emotional well-being of students in order to achieve academic success.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) serves all GW students and engages the entire campus community, working to build a campus culture of support and connection with student mental health. CAPS supports mental health and personal development by collaborating directly with students to overcome challenges and difficulties that may interfere with academic, emotional, and personal success. Counselors provide a safe, non-judgmental, and confidential environment for students to discuss concerns. The CAPS team is committed to respecting and promoting the value of diversity and inclusion at the university, as well as providing culturally sensitive counseling and psychological services to the university community.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Clinical Services, the Assistant Director for Counseling Outreach is responsible for the following duties:

• Supervises a team of clinical staff, overseeing performance management evaluations, assessments, and training functions.

• Provides direct clinical services within a culturally competent framework, including individual assessment to determine treatment recommendations, brief counseling interventions, group counseling, and referral services.

• Oversees all aspects of the direct clinical services provided by the unit, including intakes and other assessments, case management, record keeping and documentation, consultations, and compliance with ethical and legal standards of care.

• Conducts crisis interventions and debriefings as necessary.

• Responsible for creating programs in the residence halls, schools, and across the campus community.

• Involves some evening and weekend programming to meet the needs of our student population

• Serves as Coordinator of Outreach. Oversees and participates in the center’s outreach activities and training initiatives.

• Coordinates and oversees outreach services to engage and support students from historically underserved and underrepresented groups.

• Oversees outreach services to meet the mental health needs of the university community, including academic support programs, educational workshops, personal skill development groups, consultation, and training programs for faculty and staff. Creates, plans, and implements outreach events, activities, speakers, seminars, tabling, etc., in the promotion of health, wellness, mindfulness, stress reduction, and safe spaces, among other topics, as needed.

• Develop and maintain relationships with both on and off-campus partners. Oversee the dissemination of information regarding CAPS programs and departments, student organizations, and other areas of the university.

• Coordinates and provides outreach and consultation to the university community, including workshops, psychoeducational presentations, and training sessions. Participates in activities and publications that promote broad knowledge of the center and its services, including new student orientation sessions, website and social media development, and handout/brochure development. Serves as a member of the CAPS leadership team, participating in program development, review, and development of policies and procedures and other activities affecting the efficient and effective functioning of CAPS.

• Serves on committees both within CAPS and within the larger DSA and GW community, as assigned. Maintains awareness of best practices, ethical guidelines, emerging trends, new legislation, and mental health laws in the District of Columbia.

This position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
