This position will be instrumental in providing water resources support to existing clients and projects in the Southeast Region, as well as working with other offices across the company. SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for an Assistant Project Water Resources Scientist. The selected individual will support various projects in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and surrounding states. Our Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, NC offices offer a unique work environment and specialize in environmental permitting, natural and cultural resources services, ecological restoration, and renewable energy permitting.
This is a regular, full time, hourly position that is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, and reporting to SWCA’s Senior Natural Resources Team Lead in North Carolina. This position will be instrumental in providing water resources support to existing clients and projects in the Southeast Region, as well as working with other offices across the company.
In this role, you will lead water sampling efforts and ensure that:
- water quality sampling staff are trained and prepared,
- the sampling analysis plan is being followed and all documentation is filled out properly,
- equipment is properly used and calibrated,
- sample delivery to labs is properly executed (e.g., chains-of-custody, bottles properly packed)
- proper coordination occurs with on-site client staff during sampling events, and
- client-requested changes are documented and executed.
REQUIRED
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Hydrology, Water Resources, Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Direct experience with water sampling of surface water bodies (streams, lakes, springs) or groundwater wells, including direct experience with using and maintaining field sampling equipment.
- Previous experience with water quality sampling and data collection including handling analytical laboratory bottles and operating, calibrating, and maintaining field water quality probes.
- Experience leading water quality field sampling efforts; adhering to water sampling plan; coordinating with laboratories; directing field crews; overseeing safety in the field.
- Excellent organizational and verbal/written communication skills; interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence; attention to detail; and schedule management skills.
- Ability to solve complex problems in the field using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
- Ability to both collaborate with a project team and to engage in independent creative and critical thinking.
- Familiarity with mapping software such as ArcGIS and GPS devices.
- Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to be in the field for up to 3 weeks each quarter for sampling events.
PREFERRED
- Graduate degree in Hydrology, Water Resources, Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or related field.
- Previous experience in environmental consulting.
- Experience with Clean Water Act permitting.
- Experience working with government agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency, US Army Corp of Engineers, North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, North Carolina Division of Water Resources, and other water agencies.
- Technical experience completing wetland delineations and reporting in North and South Carolina.

An employee in this Raleigh, NC-based position can expect an hourly pay rate of $26.75–$34.25/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
