A Behavior Technician works as a team member with teachers, counselors, school social workers and other appropriate personnel to establish positive student contacts that develop appropriate and positive behavior modifications enabling students to succeed. He/she will assist instructional personnel by participating as a team member in the development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals and plans, including a Behavior Support Plan (BSP) and/or a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Oversees a Guidance Center or In School Suspension room for students needing assistance outside the classroom setting. 2. Works one-on-one with students to affect behavior changes. 3. Evaluates student’s needs and provides interventions to redirect behavior. 4. Implements behavioral programs designed to make positive and appropriate changes. 5. Assesses crisis situations and defuses situations using conflict resolution and crisis management techniques. 6. Reinforces appropriate behaviors and redirects negative behaviors. 7. Provides values clarification including rules, expectations and consequences. 8. Implements consequences for inappropriate behavior. 9. With proper training, physically restrains students if necessary for safety. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Works with related agencies to develop an effective program of activities for changing unacceptable behavior of students. 2. Provides information to parents, guardians, or other care providers concerning action of students. 3. Ensures consistency of behavioral standards by coordinating with appropriate student contacts. 4. Monitors physical and emotional changes in students and reports to appropriate personnel and agencies. 5. Consults with teachers, support staff, and administrators to obtain information and advice on prior behavior problems, and provides information as necessary concerning behavioral concerns. 6. Maintains a professional rapport with program/site staff 7. Assists the school site team by monitoring student behavior changes, assisting with academics, and supervising various activities during the course of the instructional day to maintain a controlled and safe environment for students and staff Union County Public Schools 8. Attends IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and student progress meetings as requested 9. Maintains awareness of fire drill procedures, all drill preparation and emergency contingency plan for the school site 10. Implements school’s emergency procedures as requested 11. Attends and provides trainings regarding safety, security, physical restraints and behavior management procedures as requested 12. Oversees peer counseling groups, social skills instruction, recreational activities, and other learning opportunities as requested 13. Attends and participates in program/site team meeting 14. Performs related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Minimum Qualifications Desirable Qualification • High school diploma with additional specialized trainings • Certifications or two years of related college coursework. • Bachelor's degree in Social Services field • Active Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Certification KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES JOB KNOWLEDGE • Basic computer skills with applications such as MS Word, MS Excel etc. • Ability to exercise patience and deal tactfully with students and parents; • Considerable knowledge of school law, especially as it relates to school attendance • Knowledge of the procedures involved in maintaining accurate records. • Knowledge of policies and practices of the school with regard to truancy and discipline. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with all persons contacted during the course of the work. • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment in carrying out functions of the position. • Considerable knowledge of theory, techniques, and procedures of social case-work. CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. • Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS WORK ENVIRONMENT: Strength: Lifting of objects with a strength factor of light work. Physical Demands: Continuous use of hands and fingers, hand-eye coordination, and manipulation of large and small objects. Verbal, auditory, and written capabilities to effectively communicate in an articulate manner. Clarity of vision at varying distances. Frequent sitting, standing, and walking. Occasional bending, reaching, stretching, pushing, pulling, kneeling and crouching. Rare instances of climbing and balancing. Environmental Conditions: Indoor office environment.
