Primary Purpose: Provide students identified with dyslexia an intensive, multisensory, phonetic instructional program that includes writing, spelling, and reading components. Provide students the opportunity to make significant gains in reading and develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas bilingual teaching certificate with required endorsements or required training for assignment
Special Education certification, preferred
Specialized training in Dyslexia and Related Disorders, preferred
Reading Academies certification, preferred
Demonstrated ability to instruction in both Spanish & English academically
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of reading, writing, and spelling instructional strategies
Knowledge of 504 process
Knowledge of Admission, Revie, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Knowledge and understanding of the interrelated components of bilingual teaching/first & second language acquisition impact on reading
Ability to administer certain assessments for identification of dyslexia
Ability to analyze, interpret, and use student data
Ability to mentor, coach, and provide professional development in the area of Spanish & English bilingual reading
Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
At least one year student teaching or approved internship
Two years teaching reading, preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
1. Provide reading intervention and dyslexia services to students with reading difficulties based on district and state guidelines.
2. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop a 504 plan OR an IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
3. Implement the dyslexia program for assigned students and show evidence of preparation as required.
4. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
5. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to adapt regular curricula as needed for students identified with dyslexia according to IEP or 504 guidelines.
6. Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
7. Participate in ARD Committee and 504 planning meetings on a regular basis.
8. Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
Student Growth and Development
9. Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
10. Conduct ongoing progress monitoring of student achievement and use the results to plan instructional goals and activities.
11. Support the campus LPAC process, which includes the identification and placement of Els, monitoring of academic and language progress, RtI for campus Els state assessment decision making, and annual review in accordance with the campus RtI process, as applicable to students.
12. Monitor the transition of newcomer Els by providing the necessary second language acquisition support to students and by collaborating with applicable staff to ensure student mastery of content and language.
13. Be a positive role model for students, support mission of school district.
Classroom Management and Organization
14. Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
15. Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
16. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Communication
17. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members in Spanish & English.
18. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Other
19. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
20. Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
21. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
22. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
23. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities: May direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
