The Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) is a livestock research facility in Clay Center, NE. The center researches methods for increasing the efficiency of livestock production.
As a Cattle Barn Head, you will:
- Provide a variety of basic to skilled agricultural duties to support research and production activities at an agricultural research facility in the beef livestock production area.
- Be responsible for general care and husbandry for approximately 800-1200 cattle.
- Maintain machinery and fences.
- Assist with pasture management.
- Collect research data.
- Oversee daily health care.
- Perform artificial insemination, palpation for pregnancy, and care during calving as needed.
- Assist with or develop a grazing plan for the land area using a rotational grazing scheme.
- Have occasional supervision of 1-4 employees.
Irregular work hours and work in inclement weather is required. Travel between pastures and facilities required. This position is sometimes referred to as a ‘herdsman’ in the cattle industry.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma plus four years of beef livestock production experience OR Associate degree in animal science or related field plus two years of beef livestock production experience; equivalent education/experience considered.
- Precision, accuracy and attention to detail necessary.
- Ability to maintain equipment, machinery, fields and pastures essential.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree in Animal Science or related field preferred.
Posted Salary
$20.00/hr minimum
