IGE Performance Chemicals is a chemical manufacturing and processing company located in Mountain Top, Pennsylvania. Receiving strong support from the US Defense Industry, IGE produces specialty chemicals and affiliated materials for Military and Pyrotechnic Applications. IGE has a chemical product R&D development team which develops manufacturing processes in the lab for different specialty chemical products, starting with a pilot-scale manufacturing process and developing a medium-scale production setup. The manufacturing process is subsequently designed and needs to be implemented on the production floor. For each product the company designs and develops a modular production set-up to produce a product on a “campaign” basis. The quantity that is produced in each campaign ranges from one hundred lbs. to a hundred thousand lbs. At the end of each production campaign the modular production set-up is removed, or dismantled, and stored for future use.

The Position:

The Chemical Research Scientist (CRS) will work with the R&D team and with the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and will oversee the implementation of each production module setup as per a given process design. The CRS will supervise each production campaign and work with the R&D team to design and implement equipment maintenance procedures as well as process improvement plans when needed. Lastly, CRS will help develop new products according to market demand.

Responsibilities • Design and develop processes for transforming raw materials into marketable products. • Assist the Chief Chemist in experiments. • Supervise production campaigns. • Provide guidance in the initial setup of equipment. • Provide process improvement recommendations when applicable. • Perform research on potential new products and come up with a synthesis plan. • Provide written technical reports on results of experiments and production campaigns.

Qualifications • A Ph.D. degree in Chemistry is required. • Have working experience with various chemicals (energetic materials, and oxidizers) and be familiar with chemical synthesis processes. • Be able to read equipment drawings and specifications. • Possessing modeling skills in COMSOL is preferred. • Have prior working experience in lab or research setting using the scientific method to produce technical reports and help design experiments. • Must have prior working experience with ICP-OES, GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR, DSC and TGA. Must be a strong problem-solver with an ability to multi-task and succeed in a fast-moving environment. Successful candidate will have strong communication skills with an ability to effectively work across all levels and exp. with MS Office.
