The Data Scientist I will be an integral member of the Analytical Tools and Data Team within Predictive Analytics, Auto Personal Lines, providing data science support to our current and future suite of analytical tools. This position will enable the team’s ability to serve stakeholders in pricing, product management, loss reserving, and product development by developing predictive and machine learning models to analyze product performance, pricing opportunities and loss development. This position will collaborate with the team’s Principal Data Scientist on Data Science projects, in addition to partners in Business Operations, Data Engineering, and Enterprise Data Science.Develops, analyzes and models operational, economic, management, accounting and other organizational data to quantify the competitive performance of business segments, evaluate potential operational changes, and design new approaches and methodologies. Analyzes organizational data to recommend solutions to new and complex problems, develops innovative strategies, quantifies the competitive performance of the organization's operations and/or markets; models and evaluates the potential impact of changes. Applies and integrates statistical, mathematical, predictive modeling and business analysis skills to manage and manipulate complex high volume data from a variety of sources.
Job Description:
Primary Accountabilities
- Leverages machine learning and predictive modeling projects across a variety of problem domains or business initiatives, building predictive models to support business partner objectives and business needs.
- Manipulates and investigates large and complex datasets and formulates data requirements and model specifications needed for development. Incorporates findings and provides industry and competitor insights as part of model development and enhancement
- Works closely with business partners and domain experts to identify critical questions.
- Working with domain experts, develops problem definition, analytical approach, and research design for modeling projects.
- Works with business partners, both internal and external, to identify new opportunities and challenges.
- Participates in the selection of research tools and technologies, design of a common research process, and brainstorming new opportunities and methodologies.
- Researches and maintains awareness of industry best practices and business strategies.
- Proactively brings in new and innovative ideas and approaches to develop business solutions.
- Monitors industry and competitor trends to determine potential impact to predictive models.
- Leverages emerging technologies, open source tools, and harnesses new mathematical techniques.

- This position requires travel up to 10% of the time
Education/Licenses/Designations
- Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Computer Sciences or Engineering, or related field or equivalent experience
Specialized Knowledge & Skills
- Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support or service.
- Ability to work as part of a team and to communicate effectively.
- Proficiency in programming languages suitable for database access, scripting, and statistical analysis. Familiarity with version control for software development.
- Demonstrated experience using large amounts of structured, semi structured, and unstructured data.
- Experience formulating, approaching, analyzing and solving problems on massive datasets.
- Solid knowledge managing data to scale using data summarization, query and analysis software and tools.
Additional Job Information:
Candidates should have at least 1-2 years of insurance experience, ideally data science work around risk based pricing, underwriting models, risk portfolio analysis or demand modeling/price elasticity analysis.
Candidates with experience in in Python/R, GCP/AWS, and SQL a plus.
Depending on qualifications, candidates may be considered at different levels.

This position is a hybrid role that involves working a minimum of 10 days per month in the office.
