The Bioinformatics and Genomics department is in the College of Computing and Informatics. The department is a research-intensive unit with both a Ph.D. program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and a M.S. in Bioinformatics. Faculty in this Department support an undergraduate Bioinformatics Minor and Bioinformatics Concentrations within the BS and BA degrees in Computer Science. The Department has excellent BSL-2 and BSL-3 wet lab facilities, several high-performance computer clusters, and has dedicated space for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and staff.

Description of Work

Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Chair of the Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics oversees the Bioinformatics and Genomics and the Kannapolis Research Center. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) and interacts closely with members of the Dean’s leadership team and other leaders within and external to the College. The Chair provides strategic leadership for advancing the educational, research, and service goals of the Department and College and maintain and enhance an atmosphere within the Department of fairness and transparency among the faculty, staff, and students.

Minimum Experience/Education

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.



Preferred Education, Skills and Experience
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, or a related scientific field and have an academic record that would allow for nomination as a Full Professor in the department of Bioinformatics and Genomics. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of administrative accomplishments with evidence of working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Applicants should have a clear commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at the graduate and undergraduate levels, a commitment to fostering diversity in science and an understanding of the unique contributions of Bioinformatics as a separate discipline. Candidates will be expected to present a clear and forward-thinking vision that aligns with department and University goals, especially with regards to establishing UNC Charlotte as an R1 research University and make a positive impact on the department, college, and university community.
