The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer at CCRM demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills in the performance of OB/GYN and infertility ultrasounds, utilizing various transducers with ultrasound imaging equipment and Doppler technology. This position reports directly to the Practice Manager and will function in an independent fashion. This position takes direction from the physicians as it relates to specific patient care needs or concerns. This position must possess competency and knowledge in discerning normal and abnormal anatomy and physiology related to diagnostic imaging; a high degree of clinical judgment and accuracy in scanning and be able to recognize pathology. The successful candidate must be responsible, attentive to details and have a desire to develop professionally and must be self-motivated to increase their level of understanding and knowledge in their field and with new procedures that evolve in the field of infertility.

Essential Functions

  • Perform clinical assessments and diagnostic OB/GYN/infertility ultrasound procedures utilizing various transducers.
  • Perform ultrasound procedures during embryo transfers.
  • Perform ultrasound Doppler procedures.
  • Perform 3D ultrasound procedures.
  • Utilize tricare to import scans accurately and in a timely manner to patient EMR.
  • Recognize cross-sectional anatomy as demonstrated. Differentiate normal/abnormal structures and provide an assessment concerning pathology viewed while scanning.
  • Provide education to patient about procedure performed and communicate information as appropriate to patient as visualization of anatomy is seen on display screen.
  • Address abnormal or concerning findings with physician in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with physician, nurse practitioner and/or nurse coordinator regarding ultrasound findings as noted, and record them in the patient EMR.
  • Keep daily log of patients scanned.
  • Organize daily work schedule and coordinate efficient patient care flow between procedures.
  • Responsible for appropriately marking superbill to charge patient for services provided.
  • Assure all images and documentation is in the patient EMR in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Clean equipment and exam beds between each patient use using a germicidal solution.
  • Re-order equipment and supplies as needed and reconcile packing slips for business office.
  • Responsible for the daily coordination of U/S staffing to assure adequate staffing at all offices.
  • Serve as a liaison between the U/S team and the physicians to assure high quality patient care/services.
  • Serve as a liaison between U/S team and other CCRM departments/teams to resolve concerns.
  • Responsible to handle patient/staff concerns/clinical issues on an as needed basis.
  • Provide counseling to the U/S staff member/team regarding clinical or patient care issues and provide feedback to improve their performance.
  • Act as a clinical expert and role model for all staff.
  • Facilitate and participate in new staff orientation.
  • Participate with the Practice Manager, in the interviewing, hiring, counseling and disciplinary/termination process.
  • Participate in the evaluation process for staff.
  • Responsible for assuring that the U/S team maintains their AIUM accreditation.
  • Assist with quality improvement projects, as needed.
  • Participate in research as appropriate.
  • Support vision and mission.

Education and Experience

  • Current American Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDS) certification.
  • ARDMS certification; maintain active status through continuing education.
  • 2 years’ previous OB/GYN related experience.
  • Previous infertility experience, preferred.

This job operated in a professional office and clinical setting with daily use of surgical instrumentation and equipment; daily use of chemicals such as Formalin; daily use of medical supplies, equipment and materials. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, including computer keyboards and mice; telephones; photocopiers; scanners; filing cabinets.

The duties of this position involves an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids or tissues or a potential for spills or splashes of them. Appropriate protective measures are required for every employee engaged in these tasks. The duties of this position also involves occasionally exerting 75 pounds of force, and/or up to 35 pounds of force frequently.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, see and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; will occasionally stand and/or walk; use hands and fingers to grasp, pick, pinch, type; and reach with hands and arms. Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; operation of standard office machines and equipment.
