Help shape a research enablement team that is proactive, highly collaborative and extremely customer focused! As UCLA Health and continues its growth trajectory, the organization is seeking to identify an outstanding individual to serve as the organization’s Director of Research Applications and Technology (Director), a key member of the Digital Technology IT (DGIT) leadership team reporting directly to the Chief Academic Information Officer of UCLA Health. A new position in the organization, the Director will provide strategic vision to successfully evolve and operate the UCLA Health Science Schools enterprise research IT services and applications which support, enable and advance basic, translational and clinical research. A highly visible role, the Director will be expected to interface with a wide variety of stakeholders, and collaborative interactions within the research communities are paramount to this executive’s success. In this role, you will be responsible for: * the service portfolio outlined below, as well as the development of new capabilities based on evolving researcher needs and emerging technologies * implementation of services aligned with the strategic roadmap of UCLA Health IT, the David Geffen School of Medicine, the School of Nursing and the School of Dentistry * serving on a number of committees and will be responsible for building, coaching and mentoring a high-performing team * delivering the highest levels of customer satisfaction and drive a "service obsessed" culture * representing the research community and serving as the liaison between UCLA Health IT and the research institutes, cores and themes * leading the research IT strategy and culture change as well as education of stakeholders on the importance and benefits of a centralizing research technology services * building cohesive, enterprise approaches to knit together disparate systems to improve researcher effectiveness and build new systems to meet unfulfilled computing, administrative, and workflow needs * catalyze, mentor, and supervise the use of clinical, basic science and administrative data sources for research purposes at DGSOM Our top research technology champion and a thought leader candidate will have an understanding of current trends in biomedicine, information technology and regulatory requirements accompanying protected information (HIPAA, FERPA, FISMA) and grant supported research as well as the following: 1) Research Data management services a. Data storage b. Data management and sharing plans c. Electronic notebooks d. Coordination of research data sets/cohort discovery 2) Research Computing: a. high-performance computing b. cloud compute and storage c. secure computing environments (enclaves) 3) Administrative research applications 4) Consultation services, training and outreach The Director will be required to be on-site as needed.

Qualifications

The Director will bring a minimum of five years of progressively responsible management positions in information technology with experience managing an IT development and support team with complex applications and technologies in an enterprise environment with substantial cybersecurity requirements. The successful candidate may come from a variety of backgrounds, though will bring a proven track record of effectively leading in an academic setting and possess an acute understanding of the full research process and the needs of the researcher. In-depth knowledge and experience in computer use in academic medicine, research laboratories, and/or academic hospitals is required, as is experience with clinical and basic science research protocols. In-depth familiarity with research-oriented systems and services, e.g., biobanking, surveying, i2b2, REDCap, research data repositories, high-performance compute clusters, sequencing cores, imaging systems is preferential. Prior experience working with Cloud computing (AWS, Azure, GCP) is ideal. The new Director must be immediately recognizable as a leader, possessing strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills, and able to quickly establish credibility, rapport, and strong relationships with a broad set of senior executives, academicians, clinicians, and research faculty throughout the organization. The Director will be a team player with collaborative and collegial skills and a strong customer service orientation. They should be a results-oriented individual with an ability to effect meaningful change in a complex organization. The Director must be able to champion the research IT vision and have a natural ability to articulate the research IT strategy to a variety of constituents. The Director must demonstrate natural relationship management and influencing skills with the ability to be both strategic and tactical. EDUCATION An undergraduate degree in computer science, information systems management, or relevant basic science field required. Masters or doctoral level education strongly preferred.
