Summary:

The Director serves as liaison between the Board of Directors (BOD), the shelter staff and the community. The Director, as the organization’s visible leader and key spokesperson, is responsible for implementing strategic goals and policies while consulting with the Board of Directors in making decisions for the highest interest of the organization. The Director works under the guidance of and is responsible only to the BOD.

Duties and responsibilities:

Managing the recruitment, hiring, development, employment, evaluation and discharge of all employees.

Oversight of all operations to include:

  • controlling and monitoring all purchases
  • managing other fiscal resources in coordination with BOD
  • managing other property resources in coordination with BOD including the maintenance of facilities, grounds and equipment

Developing a job description for all employees to be reviewed and approved by the BOD annually.

Ensuring compliance of SCHS to all applicable laws, regulations, licensures and accreditation standards.

Overseeing the handling, treatment, well-being and care of all animals admitted to SCHS.

Meeting regularly with the BOD to present reports and apprise them of important issues, concerns and new ideas while serving as a liaison between the BOD and the SCHS staff.

Negotiating contracts and other business matters as approved by the BOD, including supervising and directing vendors, contractors and consultants.

Preparing an annual budget and other reports and records as required by the BOD.

Ensuring shelter procedures and policies are in alignment with SCHS goals and Mission.

Planning, organizing and directing programs that carry out SCHS goals as established by the BOD and ensuring these meet the public needs.

Being available to meet and explain the SCHS Mission, philosophy and long range goals as the chief spokesperson while maintaining community contacts with professional, government, media and civic organizations.

Assuring effective fundraising planning and implementation, including identification, cultivation and solicitation of potential funding sources. Promotes and represents SCHS to potential and current donors and funding organizations.

Managing, directing, and implementing fundraising and public relations activities.

Developing relationships and partnerships with stores in the community that provide donated food and services to the shelter.

Other duties as assigned.

Work Requirements:

Physical Demands May Include:

  • lifting and moving animals and cages
  • administering dangerous and lethal drugs
  • frequent movements, including but not limited to standing, walking, stooping, carrying heavy loads, movement of cages, restraining active animals and operation of motor vehicle

Working Conditions Include:

  • possible exposure to dangerous, diseased, frightened and injured animals
  • possible exposure to potentially harmful chemicals and drugs
  • working with strong cleaning agents on wet surfaces
  • indoor and outdoor work in all weather conditions
  • able to tolerate loud working conditions

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent work experience

Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a shelter preferred

Valid NC driver’s license

Ability to manage various levels of public interactions

Understanding of companion animal care and adoption

Sincere interest in and knowledge of animal rights issues and animal health care

Must have a demonstrated knowledge of organizational and financial procedures for non-profit agencies
