Overview

Colonna's Shipyard is immediately hiring for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class Dock Hands/Mechanics.

This is a full-time position with competitive pay, based on experience, and immediate work within our headquarters in Norfolk, VA.

Responsibilities

  • Proficiency in use of all types of hand and power tools and machines
  • Block and haul various vessels
  • Builds keel and bilge blocks, cradles, and shoring for supporting ships in drydock , marine railways, shipways, or building docks, using woodworking handtools and power tools
  • Positions and secures blocking and other structures on dock platform, according to ship's
  • Aligns vessel over blocks
  • Ability to identify various types of wood
  • Ability to identify various types of ropes
  • Responsible for dry dock and railway line handling
  • Direct, move, assist and securely moor vessels to dock
  • Complete the shifting and mooring of tugs and ships
  • Successfully operate small boats
  • Operation of the following equipment:
  • Loaders, Drydock equipment, Forklifts, JLG's Band saws, Chainsaws
  • Pile driving hammer, Air driver
  • Burning torch Planner
  • Successfully complete the maintenance of dry docks and railways
  • Cut and construct shaped bilge blocks
  • Shipfitting and rigging duties
  • Emergency procedure knowledge for the following: Loss of power
  • Damage control Block cutting
  • Understand and act upon instruction
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities
  • Must have regular, reliable attendance
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment- hard hat, safety glasses, steel toe boots/shoes and, when necessary, respirator
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3-7 years maritime experience in trade Technical training preferred
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Dockhand
  • Must be able to work effectively with others Must be a steady, reliable worker
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow simple instructions

Tool Requirements

The following tools are expected to be part of the Dock Associates, employee provided, and maintained toolbox.

  • Hammer
  • Steel Shank
  • 25' Tape Measurer
  • Crow Bar
  • Rain Gear

Work Environment

Exposure to extreme weather conditions, dust , dirt, fumes, gases, smoke, and confined spaces are to be expected .

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position , the employee is regularly required to:

  • Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Climb, Reach, Push and Pull, Stoop, Crawl, Kneel, Balance, Lift and Carry various objects and equipment
  • Use hands to finger, handle, feel, or control objects and/or tools
  • Access areas of facility and vessels by inclined and vertical ladders
  • Hear, talk, and smell
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
