Lutheran Services Carolinas welcomes refugees and immigrants and helps them transition into a new life and a new culture through our New Americans Program (NAP). Refugees are people who have been forced to flee their home country due to a well-founded fear of persecution due to their race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion.

Today there are 15.2 million people worldwide who have been forced to flee their home countries and live as refugees in a foreign land, one of these being America. Our New Americans Program works to assimilate and support these individuals upon arrival into North or South Carolina. The team welcomes the new arrivals with Reception and Placement Case Managers, Community Volunteers and Employment Specialist.

The Employment Specialist's primary role is to assist clients in employment-related matters. S/he provides a range of employment/job development and employability case management services. The Employment Specialist objective is to provide services that will lead clients to gainful employment, self-sufficiency and independence.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide employment services to clients. These services can include skills assessment, resume building, job development, interview coaching, networking with area employer and employment orientation.
  • Provide case management services that assist clients in obtaining gainful employment. These services can include transportation and bus orientation to interviews, liaison with interpreters, cultural orientation, and addressing other employment barriers such as health care, childcare, ESL and other
  • Document and report according to contractual requirements and in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, employers, co-sponsors and volunteers, local agencies and organizations, and funders.
  • Design and conduct job development workshops as needed.
  • Transporting clients in personal vehicle may be required at times.


Qualifications (Minimum Job Requirements):

Education: Bachelor’s degree or high school diploma with two years experience in job development or related employment activities.

Experience: Cross-cultural

Specific skills/abilities: Good public relations and interpersonal skills. Proficient in reading, writing and speaking skills in the English language. Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). Possess awareness and sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics is required. Effective in bridging between the client’s world and the employer’s. Have insight into human behavior and motivations. Be Compassionate. Have discretion and flexibility. Be willing to comply with rigorous documentation demands and have ability to calmly balance competing demands. Target languages-Dari, Pashto, Ukrainian, Russian, Arabic, Swahili, Spanish—none required but a bonus!

Specialized knowledge, licenses, etc: Valid NC or SC driver’s license
