Description

Departmental Background:
Caterpillar is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction & mining equipment, heavy-duty off-road engines and industrial gas turbines. With over 10,000 engineers worldwide, Caterpillar has been developing class-leading machines and engines for almost 100 years. The Energy & Transportation Technology (E&TT) team is part of the Caterpillar’s Integrated Components & Solutions Division (ICS), which has global responsibility for advancing technologies to support future product needs. Many exciting hardware and software technologies are being identified, researched and developed for future powertrains for off-road machines, including approaches for increased power density, high efficiency hybrid powertrains, sustainable low-Carbon-intensity fuels, waste heat recovery, energy management, electronics and controls, advanced power sources, dual fuel engines, and ultra-low exhaust emission technologies.

Job Specific Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have the technical skills, experience, initiative, and communication skills necessary to execute and deliver on technology development projects in the energy and power systems space. This role is primarily about project leadership, but significant individual technical contribution is expected. Example projects include research and development of 0D/1D internal combustion engine (ICE) simulation tools for improved predictive accuracy for low Carbon fuels; application of 1D system simulation tools to evaluate low-to-zero Carbon power systems across various off-road work cycles.

Specific tasks include, gathering and understanding thermofluidic simulation tool requirements for E&T research and NTI programs; obtaining and analyzing technical data from internal sources and external collaborators to develop technology concepts for improving simulation capabilities and predictive accuracy; simulation and analysis of sustainable fuels combustion; summarizing research project results and presenting to key stakeholders across the enterprise; leading TRL reviews and delivering these milestones on time and to budget.

Job Duties

Job duties include the following:

  • Work with senior technical leadership and Competency Manager to develop and set strategy for 0D/1D engine simulation tool capability to support research and NTI engine development programs
  • Research and develop physics-based model frameworks to improve predictive capability of 0D/1D combustion simulation tools.
  • Develop plans, and work with Competency Manager to allocate technical resources to execute combustion simulation tool improvements.
  • Provide technical direction and/or own technical contribution to develop, validate and deploy tool improvements in collaboration with internal and external tool developers.
  • Work with engine business units to understand gaps in and requirements for 1D simulation of alternative fuel combustion, and translate these in to MGPP's for tool demonstration or improvement projects.
  • Lead projects through the TRL process.
  • Work with combustion engineers in team to identify and specify fundamental physical data needed for model development and validation.
  • Support development and demonstration of combustion systems for low-GHG fuels by performing detailed simulation and analysis, making conclusions and communicating results and recommendations to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with internal process partners to provide a stable, high performance, cost-effective combustion and thermofluid computational environment (both software and hardware)
  • Support training of engine BU analysts in newly-developed and validated combustion and thermofluid 1D models

Basic Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited institution
  • At least 15 years of experience in engine simulation
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python programming
  • Experience with implementation, validation, deployment and user support of new simulation tool capability
  • Deep understanding of engine physics
  • Experience with 1D simulation of both liquid and gases fuel combustion

Top Candidates will also have

  • M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Engine performance and emissions (test) development experience
  • Proven track record of project delivery and superior technical accomplishment
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate productively across sections, divisions and departments.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
