Summary – basic function of the role
Lead and mentor a team of engineers to design and develop biomedical textile products and processes, manufacturing methods, techniques, practices, and procedures with a focus on flat fabric processing to ensure the manufacture of products which meet and exceed customer expectations.
Shift: Monday – Friday; 8 – 4:30 pm or 8:30 – 5:00 pm; flexible
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direct supervision for the knitting and weaving product development team.
- Allocate team resources to manage and drive product development agenda, including activities such as product trials, engineering studies, and qualification activities.
- Lead problem solving efforts relating to area of responsibility and formally document in the form of CAPA and Engineering Change.
- Lead research in technology trends and explore new ways of thinking to inspire team members to develop innovative technologies, products, and solutions.
- Drive innovation and innovative thinking.
- Participate in strategic planning with the Engineering Director and Sales and Business Development teams.
- Function as the Cortland Biomedical subject matter expert on knitting and weaving machines and processes.
- Develop textile forming and finishing processes for new products in medical device applications.
- Support the development and documentation of detailed cleanroom manufacturing processes to support new product development.
- Create PFMEAs, EIOQs, Procedures, Work Instructions, Process Flows, Routers, and other QMS documentation in compliance with Cortland Biomedical QMS standards.
- Perform manufacturing time studies and develop cost models for products under development.
- Write and execute engineering and validation protocols to support process validations (IQ/OQ/PQ) and the creation of statistically derived product specifications.
- Assume responsibility for the transfer of new product development processes to commercial production.
- Support the creation, audit and review of test standards and methods for the analysis of design concepts and component assemblies.
- Support the identification, tracking, logistics and installation of capital equipment including potential travel for site acceptance testing.
- Support the design and manufacture of clean room compatible fixtures and tooling intended to aid manufacturing processes and interface with existing equipment.
- Make decisions related to supplier selection for new machinery, tools, and fixtures, and work to establish vendors on the ASL.
- Expand Cortland Biomedical’s expertise in state-of-the-art engineering, manufacturing methods and materials utilization through technical journals, seminars, advance degree programs, etc.
- <10% domestic and international travel in support of customers, engineering projects, site acceptance tests and training.
Skills and Competencies
- Expertise in knitting and weaving processes and hands-on experience with related machines.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot problems with textile manufacturing, specifically with knitting and weaving processes.
- In depth knowledge of the physical and mechanical characteristics of fabrics, fibers, yarns, and polymers.
- Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as a team member, and proven leadership/management ability.
- Proficient at building, motivating, and developing high performance teams.
- Effective verbal communication skills and comfortable interacting with peers, direct reports, and customers; ability to develop relationships, adapt, be customer focused, and innovate.
- Effective technical writing skills consistent with writing engineering reports and quality management system documentation.
- Must have demonstrated creative problem solving and effective engineering decision making skills.
- Self-starter able to work under minimal supervision.
- Capable of generating and delivering presentations to management, peers and labor force.
- Experience with Enterprise Resource Platforms (ERP) preferred.
Education and Experience
- BS Degree in Textile or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university, MS Degree is preferred.
- 10+ years of experience in a textile engineering function within a manufacturing environment
- 5+ years of management experience
Physical Demands
Employee will occasionally be exposed to the following:
- Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and poles
- Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments
- Remaining in stationary position, often standing, or sitting for long periods
- Adjusting or moving objects up to 20lbs
- Repeating motions with hands, wrists, and fingers
- Operate machinery and or power tools
Employee will constantly be required to do the following:
- Communicate with others to exchange information
- Assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of assigned work
Work Environment
- Work environments range from normal inside/outside facility spaces (offices, warehouse) to a controlled manufacturing space with specific gowning and PPE requirements.
- Occasional work in manufacturing space with exposure to heavy levels of noise with required hearing protection.
