Job Purpose:

The Engineering Manager, Locomotive Traction Systems, develops, and supports locomotive systems including:

AC and DC Traction System; Traction System Power Electronics; Traction Control Software; Locomotive Ground Detection System. Responsible for managing a team of engineers working on design, development, integration, implementation, and testing of Progress Rail products, including manufactured parts.

Education / Training:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience;

Key Job Elements:

  • Lead a team of electrical engineers responsible for design and development locomotive AC traction and auxiliary systems, and components;
  • Provide leadership for the locomotive traction and auxiliary systems product and technology development to support various locomotive platforms;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop power electronics components for traction and auxiliary system applications to meet product and critical customer requirements;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop motor and power electronics controls for traction and auxiliary systems to meet locomotive system level requirements;
  • Work with program management team to provide leadership in implementing NPI and NTI process and timely execution of projects within the budget;
  • Work with vehicle program management and product line managers to secure and plan the development of traction and auxiliary system components and manage motor control software schedules;
  • Participate in the traction systems portfolio planning sessions with aftermarket and sales teams;
  • Develop and manage R&D and POS engineering operating and capital budgets to maximize OPACC;
  • Develop the resource forecasts for designated programs and traction and auxiliary systems engineering team;
  • Work with locomotive systems engineering team and other cross-functional teams to identify, establish and implement cost saving ideas to reduce overall product cost, and develop plans for execution;
  • Work with the stakeholders to create CTQ scorecard and guide the design of the locomotive traction and auxiliary systems or components to meet the performance, cost, reliability, availability, maintainability, serviceability, and safety goals;
  • Work with quality engineering to establish and achieve product compliance of locomotive traction system per ISO and EN standards;
  • Coach, develop, and assign work to the team members. Establish yearly SMART goals for the team and conduct 1-on-1 meetings with the team members to provide timely feedback and performance reviews;
  • Assist technical leads in determining work priorities, decisions on planning, procurement, and program requirements;
  • Effectively communicate up, down, and across the organization to a diverse range of technical and non-technical team members and business partners;
  • Represent the company at technical conferences and interface with customers worldwide on a regular basis to discuss about the product performance and issues;
  • Work with universities to stay abreast with latest technology and participate in career fairs to recruit best talent;
  • Travel as required;
  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in electrical engineering with a focus on design, materials, R&D, and manufacturing as related to the rail industry;
  • Broad and deep experience in electric drivetrain design and development;
  • Demonstrated experience in power electronics design and development;
  • Desirable experience in motor controls and power electronics controls;
  • Experience in development of other electrical components like dynamic brake grids, batteries, ground detection, and low power auxiliaries;
  • Experience with NPI/NTI process and leadership. Familiar with EN RAMS verification and validation process (V-Model) to meet product compliance;
  • Experience in Project Management tools and techniques; demonstrated experience in managing a team of engineers in development and design needed to meet railway industry needs; proven project management experience with engineering development of complex engineering solutions;
  • Familiarity with Association of American Railroads (AAR) specifications and regional industry standards a plus; experience with ISO requirements;
  • Proficiency in tools: MS Project or Liquid Planner, MATLAB, Simulink, dSPACE, TI DSP, PSIM, CANalyzer, CANape, CAT-ET, Perl, Python, SourceTree, Jira, Git, IBM Rational, PeerReview Complete, EN5012X RAMS, PLC 5-5000, TeamCenter, etc. as appropriate to the position;
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral; able to create detailed specifications, procedures, and technical reports;
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Blueprint reading;
  • Ability to travel as required.

  • Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting (up to 30 pounds);
  • Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment;
  • Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;
  • Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE;
  • Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;
  • Safety – This is not a safety sensitive position, but occasionally requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
