This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. This is a professional chemistry position that requires the application of established chemistry methods, chemical theory, and the principles from related sciences, to conduct and interpret the results of qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses on a variety of substances. Employees operate a variety of complex laboratory equipment and elaborate instrumentation requiring frequent calibration and adjustment, including preventive maintenance and moderate repair.

The primary purpose of this position is the extraction and analysis of water, soils, sediment, and tissues for per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), semi volatile organic compounds and petroleum hydrocarbons. Work involves preparing and analyzing samples containing analytes at very low levels and having matrices that mask, react or interfere with target analytes during analysis. These duties involve sample preparation utilizing organic extraction methods, assistance with instrumental analysis by gas and liquid chromatographic systems, and maintenance of analytical systems. Work involves oversight of the work of the Extractions unit. Employee may be required to perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

The Division of Water Resources:
The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolina’s drinking, surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance, investigations, regulatory compliance and enforcement, monitoring and field assessments, certifications, laboratory analysis and testing, planning, water quality standards management, educational outreach and other efforts. The Division comprises six Sections: Water Quality Regional Operations; Water Sciences; Public Water Supply; Water Quality Permitting; Groundwater Resources, and Water Planning. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Demonstrated experience with at least one of the following: Gas Chromatography (GC) using any of the following detectors: Flame Ionization Detector (FID) or Mass Spectrometry (MS); Liquid Chromatography (LC) Mass Spectrometry (MS) Ion Chromatography.
  • Demonstrated experience with at least one of the following chromatography data system (CDS) software packages: Mass Hunter, Chem Station, Open Lab, Tracefinder or other CDS software package.
  • Demonstrated experience to generate/review technical data reports.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in the practical application of theoretical chemistry including one year in environmental work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
