POSITION SUMMARY:

The Equipment Operator I is skilled work in the operation of farm-type or utility tractors, dump trucks and other similar or related power equipment. A principle responsibility of this work is the safe operation of a vehicle, not only for the protection of the incumbent, but also for the protection of materials or equipment hauled, as well as the safety of personnel riding with the incumbent or working in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle operated. Responsibilities extend to observing and reporting operational defects in the equipment and performing preventive maintenance services. Frequently, an employee will be a member of a construction or maintenance crew, and when the work of the crew does not require equipment operation, an incumbent is expected to work as a laborer in accomplishing the tasks that have been assigned to the crew. Work is appraised relative to the care and safety with which equipment is operated as well as to the extent of which an incumbent contributes to the production of a crew.

Detailed Description


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Operates farm-type or utility tractor with rotary mower or said tilling equipment; operates tractor on school grounds and on roadways, regularly lubricates tractor and equipment, changes rotary mower blades as required;

  • Operates a dump truck in the hauling and placement of maintenance materials; operates dump truck with snow plow or other snow removal equipment; works evening and night shifts as necessary to resolve snow emergency situations;

  • Operates a crew, van-type or pickup truck as needed in the maintenance operations;

  • Participates with a construction or maintenance crew in the leveling, preparation, seeding and other operations necessary for the construction and maintenance of playground and athletic fields. Participates with a crew in the preparation of surfaces for asphalt topping, including driveways, playground apron extensions, roadways and similar or related surfaces. Participates with a crew in the patching in chuckholes or other abrasions to the surface of roads and driveways;

  • Participates with a crew in clearing trees or brush; loads and unloads waste materials as well as construction and maintenance materials, equipment and supplies; and

  • Performs related duties as assigned.



Job Requirements


QUALIFICATIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland motor Vehicle Operator's license with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.

  • Working knowledge of the operations and care characteristics of various trucks, utility tractors and/or other similar or related equipment;

  • Working knowledge of hazards and related safety precautions involved in the operation;

  • Ability to operate equipment skillfully and safely;

  • Ability to detect needed repairs and to make minor operational adjustments;

  • Ability to understand and to carry out oral and written instructions;

  • Ability to work in harmony with the members of a construction and maintenance crew;

  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions; and

  • Ability to keep routine records and to report work performed.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Completion of a standard high school diploma or GED; some experience in the operation of various trucks or related maintenance equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities .

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Class A Commercial Driver's License), at time of appointment, and a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. (See Prince George's County Public School's Bulletin P-1-88 dated July 21, 1987) . Note: copy of Driver's license record required with application.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
