Purpose/Introduction

The Commercial Organization plays a key role in developing and executing CPChem’s strategy and business plans. Commercial coordinates with Manufacturing and Technology to develop optimal sales and operating plans, grow our asset capabilities and plan for the future. They identify and evaluate business opportunities, execute the supply chain, build customer and supplier relationships and work to continuously improve our offerings to provide increased value for our customers and shareholders.


Responsible for managing and optimizing CPChem’s ethylene business to achieve maximum sustainable profitability while also optimizing cash flow through working capital management. Scope includes Sales and Operations Planning and coordination with Manufacturing for 6 ethylene crackers across 3 sites producing over 30 MMlbs/day of ethylene. Responsible for sales and marketing of ethylene to internal (approximately 85%) and external customers (including export sales), including price and contract negotiations and relationship management. Additional commercial responsibilities include product stewardship, as well as inventory management, including spot sales and purchases as well as external exchange agreements, to meet customers’ needs.

The Ethylene Commercial Manager also has a key role in assessing the near term and long term marketplace for ethylene and ethylene derivatives, understanding global supply and demand dynamics, developing business strategy and budgets, and coordinating execution of business plans with the Propylene and Heavy Olefins Commercial Managers as well as the feedstock supply and pipeline groups. This position supervises one direct report, who is responsible for product movements and coordinating with pipeline group to balance the ethylene pipeline grid.


As the manager of one of CPChem’s largest product lines, this position works closely with stakeholders across CPChem to optimize the ethylene business including consideration of chain margin through CPChem’s PE and NAO businesses and to communicate efforts and results. This includes leadership in olefins unit feedstock selection, working with manufacturing, pipelines, and technical to identify and evaluate capital and/or expense project opportunities, working with business and financial analysts to understand and forecast results, and partnership with CP&T to support communications to our Owners.


This position requires strong business acumen, commercial capability, critical thinking skills, and the ability to communicate effectively across a broad range of audiences to assess, develop, and execute a business strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Assess global and domestic market conditions and develop and execute business strategy
  • Understand markets and CPChem’s competitive position within them well, in order to maximize value on spot purchase/sales and appropriately manage risk while efficiently managing working capital (inventory)
  • Key contributor to Olefins budget development, responsible for performance to budget
  • Manage profitability through portfolio management, feedstock selection, contract and price negotiations, and business optimization
  • Monthly profitability assessment and forecasts
  • Coordination with Manufacturing and leadership of Olefins Sales and Operations Planning
  • Internal customer coordination and support
  • External customer sales and relationship management including partner exchange agreements
  • Assess trade-offs of complex deal structures and their impact to CPChem olefins strategy
  • Support CPChem stakeholders as the Ethylene commercial SME
  • Partner with manufacturing, technical, and pipelines to identify, evaluate and sponsor investment/project opportunities
  • Lead Olefin Enterprise Readiness efforts for Golden Triangle Project

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Business or related Technical Field
  • Minimum of 10 years related industry experience
  • Strong leadership, teamwork, and communication skills
  • Significant commercial experience and strong business acumen
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to assess market data and develop/execute a strategy
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the demonstrated ability to build relationships and effectively communicate and collaborate across organizational boundaries at all levels
  • A high capability for self-management and learning agility

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters of Business Administration considered
  • Olefins and/or Olefins chain knowledge and experience
  • Experience in commercial negotiations, contract development, and external relationship management
  • Experience with product management including profitability analysis and portfolio management
