Position Summary

The Washington University School of Medicine Operations & Facilities Management Department provides a range of services for the medical campus in a customer-focused, efficient, and sustainable manner. Operations & Facilities Management maintains 61 university buildings and provides operational, planning, and construction services to over 8.3 million gross square feet of space. We will open three new facilities between 2023 and 2025 with over 1.5M BGSF. In addition, the School of Medicine continues expanding its reach on and off campus in teaching, clinical care, and research. Our team plays a vital and important role in delivering care, research, and services.

Position acts as the principal Door Technician for Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM). This position will be responsible for being the primary door technician for all critical facilities in the university. The technician will provide training and mentoring to all technicians on their team. This position will be considered the subject matter expert in their field and assist Capital Projects on building projects. This position will hold a license for their trade, if applicable.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serves as Senior Tradesman for door technicians. Assist Repair, Renewal, and Maintenance Supervisor with door program preventative maintenance (PM) and renewal. Meets with customers and visit job sites to determine scope of work and coordinate with contracted services for any work not completed by WUSM door technicians.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs all campus swinging, sliding, and roll-up doors, both manually operated and automatic. Provides cost estimates, order materials, and schedule work for large-scale projects requiring the expertise of the Senior Door Technician. Completes project overview with assigned technicians/contractors to ensure that project scope and timeline are understood. Periodically inspects job sites to ensure that services are being provided efficiently and with excellence.
  • Plans and completes individually assigned short-range projects and tasks as needed/required.
  • Works with Program Coordinator and Repair, Renewal, and Maintenance Supervisor to establish and manage PM programs related to campus fire-rated and automatic doors.
  • Provides training and education for level III technicians in their trade to ensure that technicians are proficient in all areas of their field. Actively promotes safety within their shop. Leads team members in the promotion and integration of new ideas, processes, and equipment.
  • Primary door technician for all critical facilities at the School of Medicine. This includes BSL3’s, animal facilities, and all other areas deemed critical.
  • Keeps Facilities Engineering supervisors aware of facility conditions, problems, and needs. Maintains effective communication with other maintenance staff. Maintains and repairs shop equipment.
  • Assumes supervisor duties when supervisor is out of office and provide recommendations on future staffing needs/changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • FMP certification.
  • Proficient in the repair and maintenance of automatic doors- preferred experience with Stanley and Assa-Abloy automatic operators and entrance systems.
  • Associate’s Degree.
  • Journeyman Level Carpenter.
  • Familiarity with Lenel Access Control.
  • Blueprint Reading.
  • Experience with Workday and or ServiceNow would be helpful.
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Good math and problem solving skills.
  • Extremely proficient in diagnosing and repairing issues with all door hardware to include but not limited to closers, hinges, flush bolts, mortise and cylindrical locks, etc.
  • Proficient at estimating time and materials required to complete assigned work.
  • Resolves maintenance problems in timely manner that will avoid disruption/delay in work environment to staff or public.
  • Must be able to lift and carry tools and material weighing in excess of 50 pounds and be able to raise and carry with assistance items weighing 200 pounds.
  • Climbs, balances, stoop, kneel and crouch to gain access to pipes, wiring and equipment.
  • Handles a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Near-visual acuity needed to read equipment diagrams and inspect parts.
  • Depth perception, field of vision and color vision needed to fit and install parts.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent of GED/HISET with vocational training preferred.
  • Equivalent of two to four years related experience in skill trade functions with demonstrated ability to perform varied maintenance tasks.
  • Must have good customer service skills and the ability to communicate with diverse groups of people.
  • Individual must demonstrate the proficiency to perform the position being filled.
  • Must hold a license in its trade if applicable.
  • REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: : Valid Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D driver’s license.

Salary Range

$25.90 - $41.46 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
