Utility Field Technician
The Town of Valdese (approximate population 4,500) is located in the foothills of the Blue RidgeMountains of Western North Carolina, 70 miles west of Charlotte, where the “foothills meet the mountains”. The Town of Valdese is currently seeking a Utility Field Technician to perform responsible, skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair and maintenance of the Town’s distribution and collection systems. An employee in this class performs skilled work in the maintenance of water and sewer lines.Work involves significant public contact and knowledge of the water and/or sewer system. Work may also require operation of construction equipment. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme cold and hot weather, heavy traffic, around loud noises, and with chemicals.
Education and Experience Requirements: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Special Requirements: Valid North Carolina Driver’s License. Certification by the state of North Carolina (Grade C) andWastewater Collections (Grade I) within 24 months. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 60 days,North Carolina Class B CDL.
Compensation and Benefits:The Town of Valdese offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.The salary range of this position is $28,996 DOE. UTILITY FIELD SERVICE TECHNICIAN
I. General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair and maintenance of the distribution and collection systems. Reading and maintenance of the water meters.
II. Distinguishing Features of the Class An employee in this class performs skilled work in the maintenance of water and sewer lines. Work involves significant public contact and knowledge of the Water and/or Sewer System. Work also may require operation of construction equipment. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, in heavy traffic, loud noises and with chemicals.
III. Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Tasks
- Maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines, hydrants, meters, and valves; participates in field work; makes water and sewer taps; repairs broken mains and service lines; flushes, cleans and inspects sewer line.
- Operates backhoes, tractors, flushing equipment, dump trucks, video camera equipment, pumps and air compressors and other equipment required to complete assigned task.
- Meet with customers, plumbers and others to identify and resolve customer complaints
- Operate sewer jet, bush hog and other equipment used in repair and maintenance of sewer system
- Read meters, perform service disconnects and reconnects
- Perform Service Calls and small repairs when called back after hours
- Stock, maintain and organize inventory
- Prepare and complete work orders
Additional Job Duties
- Performs other duties as assigned by Public Works Director and Crew Leader
IV. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement and repair of water and sewer lines
- Considerable knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual methods dealing with the repair of distribution and collection system
- Skill in operating heavy construction equipment
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships w/ employees and supervisors
- Ability to read utility mapping, service manuals, understand and follow written instructions
V. Physical Requirements
- Must be able to perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and /or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Must possess visual acuity necessary to read maps and work orders, operate a vehicle and a computer terminal and to read and prepare reports including the analysis of data and figures

VI. Desirable Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school and considerable experience in Water Distribution and Sewer Collections repair and maintenance. Equipment operation experience preferred.
Special Requirements
- Certification by the state of North Carolina (Grade C) and Wastewater Collections (Grade I) within 24 months.
Possession or acquire North Carolina class B CDL within 60 days
