GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs mechanical repairs and maintenance to any mobile equipment used to maintain the city. Troubleshoot with different type of motor vehicles and making repairs accordingly. Repair and maintain tools and machinery as requested. Observe safety and security procedures. Communicate and Coordinate with Fleet Management about purchase of parts for needed repairs. Other duties assigned by the Department Head and Supervisor.

Reports to the Fleet Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include but are not limited to the following tasks:

  • Identifies mechanical problems, either visually or with computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Performs tests on specific parts and systems to confirm proper mechanical function; ensures that all critical parts are examined.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance, including oil changes and tune-ups.
  • Repairs or replaces malfunctioning parts and systems, such as brake pads, belts, water pumps, transmissions, and other mechanical parts.
  • Performs further tests, which may include test driving the vehicle, to ensure repairs are completed correctly.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

  • Comprehensive and practical knowledge of all aspects of vehicle repair.
  • Excellent mechanical repair skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to visually diagnose mechanical issues.
  • Proficient with computer diagnostic equipment and software.
  • Ability to read service and repair manuals.
  • Ability to perform repairs in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to read work orders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • ASE Certified preferred but not required.
  • Three to five years of related experience required.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Power tools, hand tools, torch, broom, tire balancer.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must hold and maintain a valid Texas State Driver’s license or obtain one within six months of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to work safely in a noisy area with many odors present.
  • Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to inspect vehicle to determine repairs needed.
  • Good vision to inspect repair work.
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel, and squat to perform repairs and inspections.
