General Statement of Duties

The Forsyth County Department of Public Health is seeking to hire a Foreign Language Interpreter to provide medical interpretation services and patient support to clients of the WIC Program. The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, more commonly known as WIC, is a federal program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The program is designed to provide supplemental nutritious foods and nutrition education as an adjunct to good health care during critical times of growth and development in order to prevent the occurrence of health problems and improve health status. The WIC Program Is Federally Funded on a yearly basis.

Work requires interaction with clients form different cultures that speak different languages, and various professional disciplines. The WIC Foreign Language Interpreter not only helps with interpretation, but also helps with eligibility determination, program explanation, help with measurements and finger sticks, issue electronic cards and explains how to use benefits, answer phone calls, calls participants to remind them of their appointments.

The Interpreter serves as a liaison between the Nutritionists, Office Assistants, Human Services Technicians, WIC Program Specialist, and the clients by providing medical interpretation and client support. In addition to assisting with translations, this Foreign Language Interpreter will assist with phone calls with Spanish speakers, and relay messages to staff in the appropriate areas.

Work Schedule
Monday - Wednesday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Thursdays 8:00 am - 7:30 pm
Fridays 8:00 am - 1:30 pm

Distinguishing Features

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Considerable knowledge of foreign language(s) in both spoken and written forms.

Fluency in English and Spanish.

Working knowledge of medical terminology.

Ability to interpret a wide range of information.

Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals in both English and Spanish.

Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.


Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school or GED and one year of experience demonstrating a fluency in both English and the foreign language(s) necessary (Spanish) to successfully perform the assigned job duties.

Prefer experience in a health care or human services setting.

A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

Valid driver's license required - this position will require the Interpreter to travel to WIC satellite clinics sites for services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Interpret for all Spanish speaking participants and applicants.

Translate documents and handouts for the clinic.

Answer the Spanish call center.

Schedule appointments and calls participants to remined them of their appointments

Determines WIC Program income eligibility, issues food benefits.

Helps with outreach events.

Works at satellite clinics as needed.

Related duties as required.
