POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, this position performs skilled work in the management, organization and supervision of tree maintenance. Performs other duties as required. This position is supervised by the Park Maintenance Supervisor.
WORK PERFORMED
65% Tree Work. Operates equipment such as aerial trucks, wood chippers, chain saws, dump trucks and a wide variety of hand tools, etc. for the purpose of tree maintenance. Prunes and removes trees, with the use of bucket trucks or rope and saddle, from County properties including County Parks, using standardized methods as prescribed in ANSI A300 Standard Practices for Trees, Shrubs and Other Woody Plants Maintenance.
15% Supervision. Act in lead role capacity on the job site. Prepares job site by setting up safety cones, barricades, other safety equipment and practices safe work habits in compliance with ANSI Z133.1 Safety Requirements. Supervises staff with respect to accountability for performance and behavior, staff development and training. Instructs staff on proper completion of tasks. Inspects and reviews work of staff to ensure that projects are complete. Counsel staff on safety practices and equipment and ensure safety is a priority. Check on and direct the work of tree care contractors hired by Shawnee County as assigned by park supervisor. Ensure all work is completed and contract obligations are being met.
10% Tree Planting. Performs other tree care related activities including planting and establishment care.
5% Maintenance. Performs minor equipment maintenance and repair activities including sharpening saws, oiling, greasing equipment and cleaning tools.
2.5% Chemical Application. Perform chemical brush control with hand, truck, or trailer mounted sprayers
2.5% Consulting. Answer questions about work being done or gives expert advice to the public, to the golf course and other departments as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of:
- Human resource management including hiring practices, disciplinary procedures, terminations, etc.
- Supervisory responsibilities and effective leadership skills.
- Basic landscape architecture.
- Arboriculture.
- Soil chemistry and the ability to correct problems.
Ability to:
- Plan and direct the work of others.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co‑workers, and their immediate supervisor.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language.
- Plan and organize a landscaping plan.
- Diagnose plant/tree diseases, pests and fungi and prepare an effective remedy for causes.
Skill in:
- Providing leadership and direction to employees.
- The use of heavy equipment.
- The use and application of chemicals, herbicides and fertilizers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree from an accredited college or university in Forestry, Horticulture, Landscape Design or related field. Related experience may be substituted for the required Degree on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Three (3) years increasingly responsible tree care experience required, including experience operating tree care related equipment i.e., aerial lift truck, wood chippers, skid steers etc.
- One (1) year of supervisory experience.
- Valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B and able to operate a County‑owned vehicle (HR‑2013-2).
- Driving record shall have no misdemeanor or felony convictions for traffic or vehicular offenses (DUI, vehicular homicide, reckless driving, hit and run, etc) on their driving record that are less than five (5) years old at the time the County-owned vehicle is being operated by the employee; have no more than two (2) at fault or chargeable accidents on their driving record that are less than five (5) years old at the time the County-owned vehicle is being operated by the employee; and have no more than two (2) traffic infractions (speeding, failure to yield right of way, etc.) that are less than one year old at the time the County-owned vehicle is being operated by the employee.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A.
- Kansas Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator Certification category 3A.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Required to pass a pre‑employment/periodic CDL physicals/drug screens and a review of driving record.
- KAA Certified Arborist or ISA Certified Arborist certification required within nine (9) months from date of hire (if not available at the time of hire).
- Required to lift fifty (50) pounds.
