Looking for a new job that is challenging and fun? The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) is seeking a Coordinator for its highly successful RUN FOR AUTISM program. This is a recruiting and fundraising position that demands a confident, outgoing person with organizational ability, an entrepreneurial flair, strong personal communication, telephone, and technology/social media skills. It also involves travel to RUN FOR AUTISM charity partner races and events at cities across the country, plus weekend and evening work once you are there. It’s demanding but fun.
OAR is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to autism research. OAR’s mission in brief is to “Raise money. Fund research. Change lives.” You can read about OAR and its mission at, www.researchautism.org. The RUN FOR AUTISM program is OAR’s signature fundraising and awareness event. It’s organized around OAR’s charity partnerships with the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and many more.
Position
The person we’re looking for must be a self-starter and goal-oriented. The main responsibilities include recruiting runners, assisting and tracking fundraising, planning race weekend logistics and activities, developing and implementing marketing strategies, and keeping track of inventory, all while exploring new and innovative ways to expand the variety and reach of the program.
The Coordinator will work hand in hand with the Director and will participate as part of the RUN FOR AUTISM staff team at major events and activities. The duties include but are not limited to:
(1) Representing OAR at the pre-race Health & Fitness Runners’ Expos in Washington DC, Chicago, and possibly more.
(2) Being part of the RUN FOR AUTISM staff support team for in-person race weekend activities for the Marine Corps Marathon (Washington DC), Chicago Marathon, NYC Marathon, and possibly more.
(3) Planning and executing the annual Active for Autism 5K & Kids Dash in Northern Virginia.
At the same time, the Coordinator will be a key part of the team that will:
(1) Execute the 2023 RUN FOR AUTISM plan/goals, (2) Examine ways to expand and improve the RUN FOR AUTISM program, and (3) Take the RUN FOR AUTISM’s fundraising success above the $1 million mark.
The Coordinator will immediately become part of a dynamic leadership and management team. They will work closely with the Executive Director, Business Manager, Research and Programs staff, Marketing staff, and Hire Autism staff. At race weekend events they will represent all of OAR, and be the “go-to” person for not only runners’ questions, but information about the entire organization.
This is not a behind-the-scenes administrative position. The Coordinator must be comfortable networking and reaching out to various organizations and groups via telephone, email, and in person at events. The ideal candidate is a person who works well independently, enjoys being in the middle of the action, and responds well in a goal-oriented environment.
OAR’s runners come from all over the world. Throughout the year, the Coordinator will help them with the race registration process, communicate with them, support them and make them feel like they are a vital part of a team. The runners look to OAR, and specifically the Coordinator for fundraising support, information on races, training, travel, etc. As race dates draw closer fundraising minimums will be due from runners. This requires a Coordinator with self-confidence, who is comfortable making phone calls and emails to people he or she may not know giving them a friendly but necessary push to meet fundraising goals.
