In order to ensure Mars is able to deliver against the Mars Compass and the Sustainable in a Generation Plan, it is critical that the sustainability function provide ongoing strategic support in the areas of business and human rights, particularly to ensure that the goals, policies, programs and plans developed across our Next Generation Sourcing initiative respect human rights while mitigating against a wide range of legal, regulatory, reputational, trade and operational risks to the business. This role is a critical leader, enabler and strategic partner across the Mars organization, not only to corporate programs, but to segment led initiatives across critical supply chains.

What are we looking for?

  • Expert in the area of Global Sustainability and Human Rights.
  • Ability to Influence others, at all levels, without direct authority.
  • Highly effective collaborator and networker - able to build and manage complex relationships Internally and externally, Excellent manager of global, diverse team.
  • Outstanding communication skills with ability to represent Mars to a wide range of external audiences.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working with and influencing third party experts, NGOs, government and regulatory organizations.

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Provide world-class subject-matter-expertise, strategic guidance and thought-leadership to the business In the area of human rights;
  • Set and implement global strategies, policies and programs across priority areas of human rights (e.g., child labor, forced labor, health & safety, women's empowerment);
  • Manage high performing team to execute programs and priorities within Mars focused on respect for human rights;
  • Monitor and assess human rights risks and provide strategic advice and guidance to business and functional leaders to help manage high risk supply chains and high-risk markets (such as cocoa, palm, sugar, rice, mint, fish, etc.);
  • Provide thought leadership and operational guidance on critical Mars programs such as Next Generation Supplier, Origin Advance, Full Potential, and other Sustainable in a Generation Plan programs;
  • Partner with senior leadership to ensure key stakeholders are kept apprised of sensitive human rights issues;
  • Develop programs and plans to resolve human rights Issues efficiently and effectively;
  • Draft, review, and/or approve relevant documents and resources in support of Thriving People programs;
  • Develop and deliver training and capacity building for key personnel in Mars segments with regard to Next Generation Sourcing and related Initiatives to respect human rights and/or empower women;
  • Provide expert guidance to senior management on social sustainability-related risk and strategy;
  • Proactively identify opportunities for Mars to support emerging policies and public statements in line with Mars’s values and principles;
  • Partner with Corporate Affairs and Legal to support external engagements and strategic initiatives, such as Mars' representation and engagement with the Consumer Goods Forum, Business for Inclusive Growth, and other associations or consortiums working to address human rights Issues;
  • Represent Mars in relevant forums where human rights and business are being discussed;
  • Provide expert guidance and perspective to Public Affairs on pressing policy issues affecting business and human rights;
  • Oversee reporting on human rights, including UK Modern Slavery Assessment and other required reports; work with others on the Thriving People Leadership Team to ensure our reporting of coverage, reach and results is incorporated, as appropriate, in Mars reporting via Mars.com, Compass reports, Sustainable in a Generation Plan reports, etc.
