Position Summary

Grounds and Nursery Specialist 4 is responsible for renovating landscapes to better compliment the native environment and making them more sustainable. This position is also a large contributor to ensuring the college campus is free of litter and debris and is accessible to pedestrian and vehicular traffic; as well as, ensuring public gathering spaces are well kept and available to the college community.

This position collaborates with various groups on campus and strives to involve multiple perspectives of those on campus and allows for group and interactive projects related to campus grounds.

Pay, Benefits & Work Schedule

Position Salary Range: $38,100/year - $50,568/year

The salary will be determined based on candidate's qualifications and related experience. Individuals newly hired to Classified position are placed in a salary range based on the WFSE Collective Bargaining Agreement.

We offer comprehensive compensation package with salary and benefits as the main components. Competitive salary is within the Range stated above, and commensurate with qualifications and experience. About the Department

Bellevue College Grounds Crew maintains landscapes and hardscapes at both Main and North Campus. The Grounds Crew supports the College's mission and goals by carrying an awareness throughout their work with regards to safety, accessibility, inclusivity and sustainability.

Essential Functions

Landscape Maintenance and Development

Performs and leads regular/routine landscaping duties including mowing, trimming, blowing of lawns and planted areas, blowing off parking lots/ roadways/sidewalks/paths/curbs, weeding of planted areas, tree pruning and care, bulb planting and flower care, planting bed and soil amendment, equipment maintenance and upkeep, bush and shrub trimming, mulch application/spreading,
Assists in recruitment, selection, training and evaluation of personnel
Plans and coordinates with administration of plant transplanting and installations, plant cultivation and propagation, greenhouse operations, planting bed renovations, planting area development and reconfiguration.
Engages actively with colleagues to ensure that proper and safe techniques are being followed during scheduled work,
Trains and develops colleagues in proper techniques and work procedures.
Communicates with and assigns tasks to colleagues as needed and outlined.
Evaluates work for adequate completion and results.
Ensures all equipment is in safe working condition.
Aids, assists, and contributes to landscape design and development of college landscape.
Assists with College sponsored events, including participation in department events such as Hayride wreath making event, and other special events, and assists in traffic control for the events.
Performs various tasks as needed to aid in normal campus operations.
Irrigation Troubleshooting and Repair

Reviews irrigation systems to ensure operation is optimal and efficient, setting and checking irrigation clock timers, repairing damages to sprinklers/pipes/valves/, winterizing irrigation systems on campus.
Upgrades/installs/or modifies irrigation systems to ensure that they are appropriate for the areas being watered
Hardscape Cleaning

Pressure washing hard surfaces at ground level and/or on buildings faces/structures, pressure washing moss/mold off of walking surfaces, removing/cleaning vandalism to College property, keeping drains clear, troubleshooting drainage issues
Trash, Recycling, and Litter Control

Provides daily effort to minimize litter and monitor waste receptacles
Collects loose trash around the exterior of campus
Changes trash and recycling receptacles around campus exterior
Cleans designated smoking areas
Monitors main campus compactor
Other

Performs other duties as requested

Minimum Qualifications

A college degree involving major study in agronomy, botany, horticulture, soils or closely allied field may be substituted for gardening experience.
At least two (2) years' experience in gardening, plant care, landscape construction and grounds maintenance.
Valid motor vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain one upon employment.
Possession of Washing State Department of Agriculture certification for pesticide application or ability to obtain within 1 year of employment.
Willingness and capability to work outside in ALL weather conditions.
Demonstrates physical ability to do the required work (i.e. lift/push/or pull at a minimum 50lbs). Must be able to bend, kneel, and or crouch repeatedly.
Demonstrates willingness to actively contribute to a work environment that embraces diversity and diverse perspectives to enhance the attainment of organizational goals, as well as building constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation and mutual regard
Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook to read and respond to email and electronic work request.
