This is a unique opportunity to lead a small organization that directly supports the highest priority focus areas for Enterprise Investment Services (EIS) – a global subdivision of ~500 crew members, while gaining insight into Vanguard’s the operational functions which provide critical support of Vanguard funds.

The Head of EIS Strategic Support will work closely with Enterprise Investment Services Leadership Team (EIS T1) which includes Jodi Miller and her direct reports, to shape the future of EIS and its support of the broader investment management ecosystem. The leader in this role will serve as the Chief of Staff for EIST1 while leading a small group of specialists (4-6) to execute on the highest strategic priorities for the EIS, and in support of realizing the broader Finance Forward vision (this is a player/coach role).

In the role of Chief of Staff, the Head of EIS Strategic Support will role model the Vanguard Management System (VMS) and support the senior team in doing the same (through partnership with the FinWoW organization). They will own the integrated business planning process for the EIS, plan and own the agendas for EIS T1 “staff time” (including huddles, staff meetings, offsites, etc.), and work with the team to advance strategic agendas and priorities for the subdivision. Additionally, they will directly support Jodi with developing the communications strategy for the EIS organization at large, and the specific leader engagement strategy, and support execution (e.g., written comms, videos, Town Halls, Leader Meetings).

As leader of the EIS Strategic Support team, they will own the development and management of the 5-year strategic EIS vision, the annual OKRs, and the Business Health KPI scorecard. They will translate EIS priorities into projects/programs that enable EIS and the investment management process to scale beyond a $15T business – including areas of focus such as the global site strategy, scaling automation, crew career pathing – just to name a few. This team will also partner closely with the FinWoW team to devise a plan to make a step change improvement in the maturity of EIS’s adoption and embrace of VMS – ultimately enabling $100M+ in value creation for Finance.

Core Responsibilities

  • Hires, evaluates, and supervises crew. Provides guidance and training as necessary to develop crew. Sets performance standards, reviews performance, and makes informed compensation decisions in accordance with all applicable Human Resources policies and procedures.

  • Directs strategic planning for the business and contributes insights derived from analysis and synthesis of the team. Manages internal business relationships to ensure that service expectations are managed and met.

  • Partners with leaders to define the business problem, issues, and planned approach for research and analyses. Leads work planning and business problem diagnosis, coaching less experienced business analysts in best practices and building business acumen.

  • Synthesizes analyses, key findings, and potential solutions into actionable recommendations. Prepares and presents business strategic analysis, findings, and recommendations to senior management, including presentations, whitepapers, etc.

  • Provides thought leadership by identifying business strategic topics and presenting compelling ideas for research evaluation. Drives the continuous evolution of the business strategy approach and frameworks for evaluating strategic business decisions.

  • Interprets and analyzes highly complex data using business acumen in order to derive key insights. Verifies the quality, accuracy, and reasonableness of the data. Displays, organizes, and crafts data into a compelling storyline with actionable insight for the senior management.

  • Stays abreast of industry, market, and business competitive trends. Recommends new and enhanced capabilities and services. Partners with senior business leaders to understand key concerns and opportunities for each line of business.

  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of seven years related work experience. Prior supervisory experience preferred. Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. Graduate degree preferred.

  • Strong communication skills required –written and verbal

  • Strong time management and leadership skills required

  • Demonstrated strength in relationship management with all levels of the organization

  • Prior experience in finance and/or the investment management ecosystem and/or operations preferred; candidate desire to grow career in the investment management ecosystem beyond this role preferred
