Overview:
The Head Softball Coach is responsible for the overall development and advancement of a competitive athletic program, in consultation with the Director of Athletics, demonstrating high moral and ethical behavior and good sportsmanship. The Head Coach must operate within budget to meet team needs and enforce rules pertaining to the University, conference, student conduct, and governing rules and regulations.
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and develop a training program to assist student-athletes physically and mentally for competition by teaching proper techniques, training athletes to adjust and respond to conditions relative to competitions, and by conversing with student-athletes concerning training sessions and competitions.
  • Develop and implement a strategic competition schedule that provides the best opportunity for selection to and advancement in the Mountain West Conference and NCAA Tournament, in conjuction with sport supervisor.
  • Develops and determines the recruitment program for and final selection of athletic talent for the University by identifying, observing, evaluating, contacting, and recruiting prospective student-athletes.
  • Demonstrate strong support for the academic mission of the University and the academic progress and ultimate graduation of its student-athletes.
  • Provide student-athletes with all available campus resources that leads to academic success and a worthwhile student-athlete experience.
  • Supervise assistant coaches, student managers and other sport-specific support staff to ensure their compliance with applicable rules, policies and procedures. Provide orientation, training and remediation as needed. Conduct regular performance evaluations.
  • Know the rules and regulations of Utah State University, the Mountain West Conference, and the NCAA.
  • Conduct self in accordance with all USU, Mountain West Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Attend department rules and regulations meetings provided for coaches.
  • Maintain relationships with current student-athletes through ongoing communication and evaluation of mental, physical, and well-being.
  • Responsible for maintaining good rapport with campus personnel and promotion of good public relations within the community and work actively in athletic fund raising as assigned.
  • Attend community functions to promote and educate the public on the program, maintain a positive image of the program and the student-athletes, develop and maintain good public relations with relevant support groups, and represent the University on behalf of the athletics program.
  • Ensure that all aspects of the program are administered with student-athlete welfare as the top priority.
  • Regularly evaluate all aspects of the program and determine changes and adjustments needed for success.
  • Develop, administer, review and manage an annual budget and ensure the program operates within the parameters.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • 5 years of previous experience coaching women’s softball at the collegiate level; or the equivalent combination of education, experience and knowledge of NCAA regulations
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in appropriate discipline
  • Demonstrated success as a head coach
  • Demonstrated success in Division 1 Softball
  • Working knowledge of NCAA Division I eligibility rules and regulations

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
