HEALTHCARE Corporate Controller

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller position is a key member of the Finance and Accounting function whose key objective is to ensure all company financial transactions and reporting are in accordance with the U.S Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

We are seeking a Corporate Controller with experience and expertise in HEALTHCARE.

Duties and Responsibilities

Month End Close:

  • Ensure month end accounting close process is completed timely and accurately and all reporting supports the company’s management objectives.
  • Supervise all accounting transactions and general ledger reconciliations for all accounting areas including:
    • Revenue recognition and contractual allowances
    • Direct accounting.
    • Payroll & bonus accounting.
    • Treasury accounting and forecasting – complete 13-week and 52 week cash forecasts and interface with FP+A planning group to ensure integrated forecast.
    • Intercompany transactions.
    • Shared services allocation.
    • Operating expenses and departmental allocations.
    • Lease accounting including:
      • Office Rents and related rent deferral/accrual entries.
      • Accounting for material capital leases.
    • Complete all required lender compliance reporting including quarterly covenant reporting, and financials, annual audit reporting and annual forward looking budgeting reporting.

Internal Controls:

  • Ensure company financial policies and procedures meet all standard internal control requirements
  • Ensure all internal control policies and procedures are documented, communicated and executed in accordance with accounting standards with no weaknesses
  • Ensure financial policies and procedures support compliance objectives.
  • Ensure any identified weaknesses are addressed and timely corrected.

Financial Audit:

  • Ensure the annual audit requirement is completed with an unqualified opinion and no material audit adjustments
  • Ensure audit results are communicated to relevant stakeholder (lenders, shareholders and management).
  • Ensure management letter and audit findings are addressed and corrected.

System and Organizational Design and Leadership:

  • Ensure the Accounting and Controllership organization is adequately staffed, trained and is executing in support of the company’s strategic objectives
    • Create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
    • Trains and evaluates staff to enhance their performance, development, and work product.
    • Addresses performance issues and makes recommendations for personnel actions.
    • Motivates and rewards staff.
    • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the company.
    • Assist accounting team members in applying GAAP and healthcare industry best practices to transactions and processes.
  • Work with the IT team to ensure the finance and accounting systems (Great Plains et al) are fully integrated with lead subsystems (RCM, payroll) and trailing reporting systems (Prophix)

Physician, Mid-level and Corporate Variable Compensation:

  • Ensure accruals are appropriate and payments timely made.
  • Ensure PL, physicians, and mid-levels corporate bonuses are properly accrued. Interface with HR and executive leadership to ensure payment is timely made.

Tax Filings and Intercompany Transactions:

  • Ensure all MSO/PC and other intercompany transactions are properly supported and executed in accordance with APA’s and state/federal laws regarding corporate practice for medicine.
  • Ensure all legal entity tax filings are timely and accurately complete – working with third party tax preparers:
    • Quarterly tax estimates
    • Annual K-1s
    • Composite returns
  • Communicate with physicians and ensure understanding of results; respond to inquiries.

Cash Management

  • Manages treasury operations through transaction processing procedures
  • Evaluates, recommends, and implements products for automating daily and monthly treasury processes
  • Integrates new locations regarding bank account setup, merchant card processing, purchasing cards, check scanners, and closing of legacy bank accounts

Mergers & Acquisitions

  • Ensure purchase accounting is recorded timely and accurately.
  • Ensure smooth transition of accounting related function.
  • Partner with other business units including the financial planning team and legal / compliance team to ensure accounting team is aligned with business plans or other key integration activities.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to and uphold all applicable federal and state compliance regulations, the NSPC Code of Conduct, the NSPC Employee Handbook, compliance policies and procedures, and applicable healthcare fraud, waste and abuse laws.
  • Understand, comply with, and enforce all NSPC policies, procedures, codes of conduct, and OSHA and HIPAA privacy rules.
  • Ensure adherence to all compliance standards among all NSPC colleagues and staff, including those managed or overseen.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • A Masters in accounting degree- CPA required.
  • Experience as Controller of a similar health care services company ($100M-$500M revenue).
  • A minimum of ten years experience in accounting field.
  • Excellent analytical and communications skills.
  • Experience interacting with Audit Committee and BOD level executives.
  • Public company Controller experience preferred.
  • Experience with Great Plains or similar accounting software preferred.
