The Department of State Hospitals (DSH) Technology Services Division (TSD) is looking for enthusiastic team members who exhibit a growth mindset and are interested in applying modern technology to meet the needs of our patients and hospital workers. The work of this position is ultimately aimed at using technology to provide forensic mental health and medical evaluation and treatment in a safe and responsible manner, while seeking innovation and excellence in hospital operations.

Assignments are flexible based on candidates’ strengths and interests. DSH offers multiple avenues for training and possible certifications. Project work is available in the areas of Infrastructure, Enterprise Applications, Security, Helpdesk, Administration and Project Management. Mentorship in these areas, along with career planning assistance, is available and encouraged.

Students will be an essential part of a team working on a project to improve the quality of life for TSD staff through automations, process templates, system integrations, and similar things to decrease time-to-resolution, improve consistency of delivery, and enhance operational efficiency. This project will have multiple deliverables with opportunities for students to work in different roles over time. Project management activities may include creating issue logs to keep up with problems and issues, managing schedules to help move the project forward and ensure deliverables are completed, and conducting the project in a scrum or agile methodology. Deliverable development activities may include communicating with TSD staff to gather ideas, opportunities, and requirements, learning about existing TSD systems and technologies, researching and proposing solutions, and implementing solutions with the project team. In cases where TSD does not already possess subject matter expertise for a technology, students may work with appropriate mentors to develop training materials, such as reports, presentations, how-to documents, or other materials.

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. UEI employees who are considering leaving their current UEI Student assistant position for a different UEI student assistant positing should inform their supervisor in writing and provide at least a week’s notice.

UEI is not a multi-state employer. UEI only employs candidates who live and work in the state of California. If selected for the position you must reside in California and all work must be performed in the state of California.


Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule

F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.


Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbal and written.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team, taking initiative to add value wherever possible.
  • Candidate who embraces a culture of continuous learning
  • Candidate who values open communication, collaboration and can do attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Individuals who are, or have been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth or a formerly incarcerated youth as defined by Government Code section 18220 are encouraged to apply and will be given priority.   • Previous experience working with confidential information.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Gain practical experience in a professional field of study that includes Project Management, Organizational Change Management, Government and Communications, website configuration, application development, information security and infrastructure design, Help Desk and administrative functions related to contracts, procurement and vendor management.
  • Complete much-needed technical projects to provide an innovative way for customers to perform their day-to-day hospital operations.
  • Assist in research, analysis, review, and other related activities for technical and administrative operations.
  • Analyze and improve processes in all areas of TSD.
  • Develop and maintain a positive relationship with DSH employees, consultants, vendors, state departments, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Help to protect patient health information.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.


Working Conditions

Work is performed in a hybrid environment and u p to 75% of the essential functions of this position may be performed via telework.

Due to COVID-19, the student will be required to work according to the current UEI remote workplace policy and sign a UEI telework agreement.
