Position Description:
Covanta Huntsville, Inc. located in Huntsville AL, is seeking an experienced Instrument & Controls Technician to work on routine and emergency maintenance of the facility’s industrial electrical and control systems equipment.
As part of our team, you will work safely to maintain, diagnose and repair all types of power plant equipment including boilers and its associated electrical and control systems equipment, repair and operation of field controllers, instrumentation, motor control centers and other power plant electrical equipment.
Position Requirements:
- Perform maintenance on Industrial plant electrical distribution systems in a waste to energy facility.
- Perform maintenance and testing of low and medium voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, motor starters, and power transformers.
- Perform electrical maintenance work related to energy from waste boilers and its associated equipment including but not limited to; fans, motors, & refuse cranes.
- Trouble shoot, assess, inspect and adjust, and make repairs, as needed to the Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) as well as all facility flow, pressure, temperature, and level instrumentation. This includes but not limited to; transmitter flow devices, level controls, temperature measurement, and flue gas analysis equipment.
- Trouble shoot, assess, inspect and adjust, and make repairs, as needed to the Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and historian devices.
- Perform preventative maintenance tasks, including routine calibration, thermography and ultrasonic testing.
- Operate various calibration equipment.
- Perform various electrical and instrumentation maintenance and repair work as assigned using proper Covanta safety practices.
- Troubleshoot electrical and instrumentation problems and complete all maintenance work records.
- Actively participate in plant shutdown work including teardown inspection of electrical plant equipment.
- Keeps work area and tools clean, and orderly manner. Perform plant and shop housekeeping chores.
- Complete required Covanta training within the assigned timelines
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the I&E leadership team.
Position Technical Training Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Formal technical or apprentice training required.
- A minimum of five years of experience as a maintenance electrician in a power plant or a similar field required.
- Strong working knowledge of 120 to 480V, AC switchgear and MCC.
- The ability to work from a layout plans and blueprints for electrical equipment installation or troubleshooting work.
- A minimum E-2 Journeyman Electrician license is preferred.
- Knowledge of ABB Infi90 DCS is preferable.
- Must be able to assess, troubleshoot, and manipulate ladder logic in PLC systems.
- Must be able to troubleshoot, and repair VFD systems.
- Proficient in pressure and temperature calibration of gauges, transmitters, IR temperature indications, RTDs, thermocouples, and any measuring instruments that provide control functions.
- The ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, maintenance instructions, and other procedure manuals
- Ability to speak and communicate effectively with supervisors and other employees of the organization.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instruction.
- Ability to follow Covanta safety rules.
- Ability to log onto a computer and complete assigned training.
- Required being on call on rotating basis as well as working overtime based on the plants needs which may include weekends and holidays.
Physical Demands:
- Frequently exposed to high temperatures and outside weather conditions.
- Working near moving machinery as well as noisy and dusty environments; must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) to include a negative pressure respirator in accordance with OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1910.134.
- Climbing ladders and structures: must be able to tolerate heights.
- Frequently required to stand, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach.
- Lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision ability required by this job includes; close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
