Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed, community teaching hospital with a focus on helping people manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.
Under indirect supervision performs quality diagnostic radiographic and interventional/cardiovascular imaging procedures utilizing the concepts and principles of radiation protection/safety. Coordinates daily work schedule and activities between Interventional and Imaging according to department need. Operates sophisticated radiographic, fluoroscopic, portable and interventional imaging equipment according to protocol and procedure. Prepares and administers oral and IV contrast media according to protocol.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
- Performs a variety of radiographic and interventional/cardiovascular procedures to ensure the quality and continuity of patient care and assists with the workflow of the department to ensure completion of all work assignments prior to end of shift.
- Verifies patient identity according to established protocol and reviews each patient’s requisition for consistency of examination ordered with clinical diagnosis and all demographic information. Records pertinent data on requisition at all times.
- Assesses patient condition, ensures patient safety through proper radiation safety practices and proper positioning devices. Demonstrates ability to organize patient care and set priorities by providing critical care first and by implementing the physician’s orders.
- Inserts, maintains, and discontinues Heparin lock or IV access devices as required by patient condition. Administers IV contrast media through said devices. Monitors patient vital signs and recognizes contraindications.
- Selects, sets up and maintains sterile tray and accessories according to department and hospital protocol.
- Prepares patient for sterile procedure according to department and hospital protocols.
- Reviews each examination for technical accuracy and abnormal pathology for presentation of completed examination to a radiologist.
- Properly marks and identifies all radiographic and interventional films.
- Reports all safety hazards and/or radiographic or interventional equipment malfunctions that could harm patients, visitors or other hospital employees to appropriate supervisor immediately.
- Maintains proper stocking and cleanliness of radiographic and interventional rooms.
- Establishes and maintains a good rapport and working relationship with department staff, hospital staff, patients, families, physicians and hospital visitors.
- As identified in the department/unit specific competency plan, demonstrates:
- The technical competence necessary to provide quality care to age specific population.
- The ability to assess the developmental needs of age specific population.
- The ability to use equipment in a safe and proper manner.
- Other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisor/manager
- Demonstrates support and compliance with the University of Maryland Medical Center’s mission, vision,values, philosophy, goals, objectives and policies.
- Processes all patients through the MediTech system before end of shift to ensure proper documentation and billing information. Identifies and inputs all appropriate charges for procedures and supplies.
Education and Experience
- Graduate of an AMA approved Radiologic Technology School. Registered by the ARRT and licensed by the state of Maryland.
- Minimum of one (1) year radiology and six (6) months interventional experience following graduation from an approved school.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Highly effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills with patients, visitors, and other healthcare team members to establish working relationships that foster optimal quality of patient care.
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
Patient Safety
Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.
- Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
- Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
- Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.
