This is a full-time, overtime eligible position on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College.

Position Purpose
As a system administrator, the position installs, configures, and maintains supporting infrastructure such as VMWare, Storage, and physical hardware, as well as installs, configures, and maintains complex enterprise systems based on Windows and Linux server operating systems and many of the respective applications and services. This position provides tier 2/3 support for the college’s computing environment.

Nature and Scope

Essential Functions
Install, configure, and maintain servers, databases, file shares, and related virtual and physical infrastructure:
  • Install, configure, and maintain supporting infrastructure, such as VMWare, Storage, and physical hardware.
  • Install, configure, and maintain complex enterprise systems based on Windows and Linux server operating systems.
  • Identify and independently resolve operational problems for major, mission critical organization-wide systems that have high risks/impacts.
  • Troubleshoot complex operational problems using techniques in performance analysis, diagnostics, and troubleshooting tools.
  • Assist Support Center with troubleshooting complex problems.
  • Research and evaluate potential client/server applications, network-attached devices, and network communications requirements.
  • Install, tune, test, update, diagnose, and monitor client/server environments, applications, databases, and interfaces (software and network).
  • Write and modify server scripts as required.
  • Create systems installation, configuration, and technical support documentation.


Oversee and provide technical support for enterprise systems and staff:
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex systems issues within server environments, client-server communications, network-attached devices, and network connectivity.
  • Develop temporary ‘work-around’ solutions as required in the event of emergencies to keep mission critical systems operational.
  • Create and manage user groups in Active Directory for the purpose of assigning permissions to execute client\server software as it relates to facility system-software.
  • Coordinate emergent and evolving technologies with college network engineers and application developers.
  • Provide technical assistance to contractors and non-IT staff on the installation of systems and devices requiring access to network/server resources.
  • Provide tier 2 and 3 direct support.

Participate in design review of existing and proposed enterprise IT systems:
  • Evaluate proposed technologies, products, design concepts, and IT systems/infrastructure needs.
  • Provide IT consultation and planning support to project managers, design consultants, and technology contractors as needed.

Participate in and/or lead IT projects related to enterprise technology systems implementation and/or upgrades:
  • Serve as project manager and/or technical lead.
  • Conduct needs assessments, coordinate project meetings, assist with technical work, and coordinate communications and technical services with vendors as required.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to use, install, maintain, and troubleshoot a wide variety of computer hardware, such as servers, power systems, data storage systems, network appliances, desktops and laptops, printers, and non-standard hardware and software, such as the Microsoft365 environment, VMWare, and Oracle databases.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a diverse community with other systems specialists, programmer/analysts, users, and managers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a high paced, high-risk environment.
  • Ability to solve high-risk, complex technology problems.
  • Good communication skills, including the ability to communicate and convey highly complex technical information to others.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Windows Active Directory and Domain Services, systems programming and automation, operating system virtualization, storage area networks, enterprise backup and replication, server and database administration.
  • Knowledge and skill to maintain applications in a mixed server environment, including Windows and Linux.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/demands and use effective prioritization skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement standards and procedures, instructions, and manuals.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to use specialized computer tools and procedures, such as file transfers, batch files, remote desktop, VPN, standardized procedures, or customized software tools as required.
  • Ability to lead moderately-sized IT system projects involving stakeholders, other IT staff members, and/or vendors.
  • Ability and motivation to become familiar with rapidly changing or new technologies and be able to apply these technologies to existing and new business needs.
  • Ability to provide related training to end-users.
  • Ability to move computer systems and peripherals weighing up to 75 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree related to information technology.
  • Three years of information technology experience, such as analyzing, installing, and/or maintaining computer software applications, hardware, or providing customer or technical support in information technology
  • Three years of professional work experience as application administrator.

Conditions of Employment
  • Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
  • Employees must comply with college policies related to masking and vaccination requirements, as well as Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 21-14.1, which requires employees of the college to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have received a medical or religious exemption prior to the first day of work.
