The Newport News Sheriff’s Office has an immediate opening for an experienced, dedicated Jail Facility Maintenance Technician. The Sheriff’s Office operates two jail facilities housing over 500 inmates.

The Jail Facility Maintenance Technician will assist the Sheriff’s Office with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, and building maintenance functions.

Applicants must have experience in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, and building maintenance functions.

The applicant must be capable of performing general mechanical and maintenance duties. The position requires general and specific knowledge of maintenance functions with an emphasis on plumbing and electrical work. You must be capable of working in a correction's setting where persons are incarcerated and may be responsible for supervising and controlling jail trustees who assist the Jail Facility Maintenance Technician. The position also requires on-call capability.

Work is performed indoors, outdoors and in confined spaces.

REQUIREMENTS

• The job requires a considerable amount of physical activity, including extended periods of sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping and climbing.
• You must be able to push frequently, lift and carry equipment, supplies and other materials weighing up to 50 pounds and to occasionally push, pull, lift and carry equipment, supplies and materials up to 75 lbs.
• Applicants must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to use arms and hands to reach, finger, feel, grasp and to handle tools and equipment utilized in maintenance and repair activities.
• This job requires interaction with other city technicians, contractors and the general public.
• The environment may be stressful working around and near the inmate population.

The Newport News Sheriff's Office shall safely and securely provide appropriate supervision of all persons entrusted to the care of the Newport News City Jail and Annex; provide for safe and secure operations in the courts; guarantee expedient and accurate service of civil and criminal warrants, and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
