Job Summary


This position is responsible for assisting the Archives and Special Collections Librarian with the management, organization, and implementation of the Archives and Special Collections services. This position will take a lead on digitization projects for the Archives. This position also assists with the University's records management program. Additional responsibilities include supervising student assistants assigned to the Archives and Special Collections area and providing direct service to Library users following established policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Working knowledge of library classification system(s) and standard library reference tools sufficient to assist clients in locating materials and conducting research.

Ability to:

  • Apply and support detailed coding or cataloging systems sufficient to create tracking for new print and non-print library acquisitions and locate and replace existing materials.

  • Operate personal computers, use various software and web-based applications, and other office equipment sufficient to locate catalog information, word-process documents, complete forms and prepare reports.

  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing sufficient to determine and respond to the informational needs of clients of varied educational levels and backgrounds; to train, direct and evaluate work of student clerical staff; and to assist the professional library staff to maintain the library collection according to library policy and procedures.

Physical health and endurance sufficient to:

  • Must be able to bend, reach overhead, and lift Library materials that weigh up to 35 lbs.

  • Must be able to push/pull carts of Library materials, which may weigh up to 200 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.

  • Knowledge of ALMA automated Library System and its subsystems.

  • Experience/knowledge of web page development.

  • Experience and/or knowledge of Archival practices.

  • Experience and/or knowledge of digitization practices in a library, archives, or museum setting.

  • Ability to learn/knowledge of the Library of Congress and Superintendent of Documents Library classification schemes and other standard Library reference tools sufficient to locate materials.

  • Ability to train others and develop training tools.

  • Familiarity with computer applications (Microsoft Office) and various types of office and library equipment ( ex. copiers, scanners, microfilm readers, etc.).

  • Ability to engage in detailed work for extended periods.

  • Good human relations skills; good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to train and supervise student assistants.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Skills to operate the ALMA online catalog.

Additional Requirements

In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.

Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating in and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.
