Hiring decision contingent upon applicant clearing a security background check and receiving an acceptable driver's training. Current Class "C" Operator Drivers License required. Prior to date of hire, applicant selected must provide a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) showing a driving history going back 36 months. This includes all states resided in for the past 36 months. MVR will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a University - owned vehicle. Applications will be reviewed online by the hiring department.

Purpose

Supervise a team of 10, including Locksmith and administrative staff members in the operation of The University of Texas at Austin, Facilities Services, Lock and Key Services Shop. Maintain security of more than 200 University buildings. Provide lock and key services to approximately 70,000 faculty, staff and students.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the administrative and technical staff of Lock and Key Services.
  • Direct all Lock and Key Services operations including planning, inspecting, and assigning work for the maintenance, repair, and operation of both keyed and electronic locking systems, mechanisms, and equipment in University facilities.
  • Participate in the planning and management of the transition to, or from, electronic access control systems and new key control software systems.
  • Develop, or work with vendors to develop, keying schedules for new construction and renovation projects. Replace construction key sets at substantial completion. Interpret and work from project drawings, specifications, and sketches to ensure University standards are maintained.
  • Approve and or create, maintain and services grandmaster key systems. Attend project reviews, staff meetings, and site visits. Review plans an specifications for both new construction and renovation projects to ensure compliance. Driving University owned vehicles to job sites will be required for this and most other functions.
  • Direct supervision of technical and administrative positions. Train, counsel, discipline, and conduct performance evaluations to maintain high standards of service delivery and provide team building. Ensure compliance with applicable policies and standards.
  • Develop and implement systems and procedures to ensure accurate lock, key, and customer records. Ensure that authorization standards and University keying practices are maintained.
  • Compose, review and process shop paperwork, including general correspondence, reports, time sheets, and material and equipment requisitions. Closely monitor and control key performance indicators.
  • Other related duties will be assigned, including working with other departments within the Facilities Planning and Management portfolio, and occasional overtime required, all to support organizational goals and objectives.

Required Qualifications

Associate's Degree in Locksmithing or related field. 3 years of experience supervising locksmiths, or other technical trades personnel, including hiring, training, coaching, and corrective action. 5 years direct customer service experience, including customer service counter key requests/pick-ups and complaint resolution. 5 years of experience as a locksmith. Experience working with project managers on lock and key aspects of large commercial construction projects. 2 years basic experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree. 5 years of supervisory experience of more than 8 full-time employees. 7 years direct customer service experience, including customer service counter key request/pick-ups and complaint resolution. 7 years of journey-level experience with 3 years as a licensed locksmith working in a complex environment. 3 years intermediate experience using Microsoft Word and Excel. At least 2 years of experience in master key systems and up to Level 4 GGM systems. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated attention to detail. Experience in a university environment

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
