Job Description Summary

The LPN is responsible for the assessment of healthcare needs as related to the health of inmates housed in the facility. Under immediate supervision of the general physician and Registered Nurse treats injuries Perform and determine minor medical diagnosis. Collaborate with general physician for treatment and medication plans of inmates. Determines extent of prisoner injuries or illnesses, dispenses medications, prepares, and applies simple to semi-complex dressings; prepares and maintains necessary charting and paperwork; oversees dietary needs of inmates. May be required to answer Medical Examiner investigation calls.
Job Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:
Complete medical screenings of new inmates.
Obtain medical records from other facilities for continuation of care if needed.
Maintain medication administration records.
Respond to daily inmate needs/medical requests.
Communicate with the Nurse Practitioner regarding orders on new inmates that cannot wait until the next clinic appointment.
Package medications for administration.
Prioritize inmates needs to be seen based on medical issues, withdrawal symptoms, suicidal thoughts/actions.
Communicate with mental health professionals to request emergency screenings on suicidal inmates.
Available after hours calls regarding inmate medical needs.
Monitor emails for repricing invoices/passdowns.
Check Records Management System (RMS) daily to see which inmates are new.
Communicate with the pharmacy/pick up medications if ordered after delivery times.
Filing of records/paperwork.
Facilitate weekly clinic with the Nurse Practitioner.
Ongoing inmate medical issues after their initial intake screening.
Submit medical, dental, EMS bills to Well Path for repricing when received back, forward them for payment.
Take all phone calls in regard to medical bills/payments on inmates.
As needed, provide documentation to the kitchen staff on special dietary requirements.
Keep medical files current and all orders signed.
Monitor vital signs/wellness checks on inmates.
Order medical supplies and keep exam rooms and medication cart stocked.
Completed paperwork for the Kansas Department of Corrections, (KDOC), Larned State Hospital and submit to appropriate agency.
Provide medical charges to the sergeant to be included in the board bill.
Communicate with city agencies (medical required within HIPPA) on their inmates (Paola, Osawatomie, Louisburg, Spring Hill).
Training.
Receive disability requests and fax appropriate records to requestor.
Receive and follow up all medical records request from other agencies.
Deputy Jailer education.
Draw blood and deliver to the local hospital.
DNA Collection for detectives or court order.
Taking inmate family phone calls.
Follow up calls to coordinate transfers to Osawatomie State Hospital.
Schedule and help with coordination of transport for appointments needed outside of the jail (dental, x-rays, clinic visits, OB visits).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Position Requirements:
Must be 18 years of age with no felony criminal record or domestic violence record.
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in nursing degree; plus, a 1-3 years of nursing experience generally preferred.
Certified as a Kansas Licensed Practical Nurse
Valid driver"s license required.

Knowledge:
Computer software programs and applications such as MS Office
County and/or city government administration
First aid principles and application
Knowledge of charting, measuring instruments for proper medications or dosages.
Maintain continuing education in field.
Knowledge and competency in health appraisal, health counseling, teaching in self-care practices, training supervision and auditing of auxiliary personnel.
Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology and directions to properly care for inmates.

Skills:
Ability to interact in a positive and professional manner to develop and maintain strong working relationships with co-workers, management and general public.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate goals, interests, and positions during discussions.
Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize
Manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines

Abilities:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents and/or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from local groups, victims, suspects, and/or the general public
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Must be able to analyze many variables and choose the most effective course of action for the organization at any given point in time
Ability to operate computer programs/software/platforms Microsoft Office and those that apply to the department
Ability to use basic office equipment
Ability to manage conflict and communicate effectively under stress
Ability to work with inmates and within the security confines of a detention setting.
Ability to understand and follow directions, written and verbal; read test results; calculate proper dosages and read history of inmates.
