What Does a Machine Shop Manager Do at CNC Machine and Fabrication, Inc.?
Machine shop managers oversee fabrication activities, manage costs and expenses through process efficiencies, employees, equipment, and other resources to meet production deadlines. They manage a budget for their area. They work directly with the Operations Manager to ensure a safe environment and with the Scheduling Manager to adjust daily schedules on machines and allocate manpower on machines and projects to maximize efficiency, skill level, and profitability on jobs. They will help quote parts with Project Managers, and drive profitability to grow the machine shop capability.
Objectives:
Supervise the plant’s Machining department by hiring, retaining employees, overseeing projects, and developing and coordinating the department team’s work activities. Striving for on time completion of projects by managing personnel, machines, tooling, and other resources. Use an MRP system to work directly with Project Managers and other team members to layout and track projects through the shop ensuring on time deliveries within budgeted time and hours. Supervise multiple employees to create an efficient, safe department. Create a positive company culture to foster employee retention. Bring a vision to the machine shop to help meet a 5 year vision plan for growth.
Responsibilities:
1. Schedules and delegates department’s workload to appropriate personnel and skill levels, counsels employees and approves work schedules, overtime, etc, to stay on budget
2. Implement agreed production schedule daily, weekly and monthly in the department
3. Work within the established MRP system to track costs and employee time spent on jobs
4. Coordinates activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities to agreed schedule, directing the work of subordinate employees to ensure daily production and protocols are met
5. Evaluate and verify employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques.
6. Corroborate with Engineering to have a strong relationship and understanding of the manufacturing requirements when part designs are ready for tooling phase.
7. Make recommendations to engineering on issues related to the manufacturability of design and help with the scope of hours on projects.
8. Review with the Planning and Scheduling Manager to adjust the schedule where needed
9. Set up and run a maintenance program in the department
10. Manage employees in the department including tracking days off, discipline actions, and reviews
11. Keep employee records in the MRP system as well as communicate with Human Resources
12. Work with vendors to purchase tooling and consumables while staying on budget.
13. Work with personnel to program machines to achieve maximum efficiency and best use of tooling
14. Work with Project Managers to understand the scope of work and provide feedback for hours and technical capabilities on projects
15. Maintain records, prepare reports, and compose correspondence relative to schedule, team correspondence, quality, shop travelers, inspection logs, etc.
16. Participate in the process of Ongoing Improvement to identify policies, processes, and procedures that contribute to improve the operations and profitability of the Company.
17. Manage outsourced parts to other machine shops.
18. Program parts using Solidworks and Mastercam

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $90,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
