Mechanical Design Engineer (Princeton, NJ)

Contract duration - 1 Year (with possible two 6-month extensions)

Duties/Responsibilities

The NSTX-U Recovery Project is working to complete a major upgrade of The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) s National Spherical Torus eXperiment (NSTX) fusion device located in Princeton, New Jersey. The Project includes a portfolio of mechanical alterations and improvements to the NSTX-U tokamak vacuum vessel internals, and mechanical systems and equipment needed to meet PPPL s research objectives.


The NSTX-U Mechanical Design Engineer s Core Duties are as follows:

  • Contribute to mechanical design and analysis of components with moderate supervision.
  • Carry out the process of designing, documenting, and reviewing engineering design and calculations.
  • Assist in preparation of cost and schedule estimates.
  • Prepare documentation (installation procedures, analysis reports, calculations, system description documents, design reviews).
  • Supervise the process of the drawings by overseeing the preparation, approval, and release of drawings for manufacturing.
  • Oversee and/or supervise the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of designed components.
  • Write specifications and statements of work to establish external standards for suppliers and vendors.
  • Coordinate the work of drafters, technicians, and other members of support staffs who assist in specific assignments.

Education:

  • Bachelor s degree (advanced degree preferred) in Mechanical Engineering REQUIRED
  • Professional experience, 2+ years (inclusive of post-BS academic experience), preferably in a scientific or R&D environment.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Application of standard principles and procedures of mechanical engineering.
  • Familiarity with simple mechanical analysis.
  • Fluency with 3D modeling/CAD and development/review of fabrication drawings.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of researchers, engineers, and technicians.
  • The ability to work in confined spaces may be necessary.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of State of the Art manufacturing methods.
  • Proficiency with GD&T.
  • Experience with metrology & tolerance studies.
  • Design Experience:
    • Mechanism and linkages.
    • High heat flux components.
    • Specialty materials and austenitic steels.
    • Diagnostic Components
    • Superconducting magnet.
    • Components in high vacuum environments.

Work Location/Hours:

Most work will be done in PPPL offices, shops and laboratories, though domestic and foreign vendor visits may be required. Work may be on 1st or 2nd shift depending on project schedules. May involve work in confined spaces, use of fall protection, other job-specific PPE.
