This key position is with Brown Surgical Associates (BSA) which is one of Rhode Island’s largest multidisciplinary surgical groups and a founding member of BPI. Our 50+ surgeons are recognized for their experience in highly specialized areas of surgery.

You will function as a Medical Assistant at BSA and report to the Nurse Manager. In this role you will:

  • Work with physicians, clinical and secretarial staff to facilitate patient-centered care. Provide direct clinical support to one or more providers. Responsible for entering patient health information into the electronic health record, rooms patients, stock exam rooms, sterilize instruments and assist with minor office surgical procedures. Display professionalism while addressing patient issues and adhere to HIPAA guidelines.
  • Obtain and document the patient’s vital signs, past medical, social and surgical history, allergies and medications in the electronic medical record.
  • Assist physicians during examinations and minor surgical procedures.
  • Practice proper handling, cleaning and disposal of all contaminated instruments and/or materials in accordance with OSHA guidelines. Perform proper labeling and handling of all surgical specimens, including delivery of specimens to the Pathology Lab.
  • Responsible for other clinical or administrative duties, as assigned by the nurse manager.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Degree from an accredited technical school required.
  • Medical Assistant Certification preferred.
  • Three years of experience in a medical-surgical office setting preferred
  • Knowledge of sterile technique, OSHA guidelines, Universal Precautions, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT codes and medical terminology required. Working knowledge of Electronic Medical Record and appointment scheduling systems.
  • Ability to walk, sit, and stand for long periods of time, ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
