JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Technologist performs clinical laboratory testing in various sections of the Laboratory. A Medical Technologist receives specimens, performs clinical laboratory tests by standardized procedures, understands method principles; performs quality control and preventative maintenance; and interprets results as to accuracy, acceptability and critical limits. The Technologist works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records all data obtained. The Technologist interacts with patient populations from neonate to elderly; with patients of all types of illnesses.
Education & Training: Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science, or a combination of education and experience along with a nationally recognized certification at the technologist level or 6 years of MLT experience. Military qualifications/training will be reviewed on a case by case basis. In addition to the above, individuals must meet federal and state requirements to perform high complexity testing. ASCP certification preferred.
Work Orientation & Experience: Experience may be required based upon education and training. The incumbent may require up to 3 months of full time detailed job orientation and training to gain specific capabilities to perform essential job functions.
Skills & Abilities: Visual acuity and color perception are required. Ability to: a) exercise appropriate independent judgement in pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic components of testing; b) effectively control, calibrate, evaluate and operate various laboratory analytical equipment; c) communicate effectively with other hospital personnel and with patients; d) maintain discretion with patients; e) adapt hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the laboratory including all shifts; f) foster a service excellence atmosphere that contributes to a healing and compassionate environment.
