Cottage Grove Place is seeking one full-time Medication Aide 2:00pm-10:30pm in our long term care! Applicant must have a current Oral Technician certification that can be provided upon hire.

General Summary:

The Oral Medication Tech assists with the administration of medications under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse. Assists licensed nursing staff by performing routine nursing duties and activities of daily living. Working in accordance with established policies and procedures and under the direction of the registered nurse and the Director of Nursing, this person is responsible for providing direct resident cares and maintaining a clean, safe environment for resident and self

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Essential Job Duties:

  • Safely prepares, administers, and charts oral, topical, and suppository drugs. The OMT who prepares the medicine administers same. Checks and prepares each dose immediately preceding administration. Follows administration protocol:
    • Checks medication with transcribed or original order.
    • Checks all information on label or package for accuracy and clarity.
    • Clearly identifies the resident with proper medication.
    • Administers scheduled narcotics only. PRN narcotics to be administered by nurse.
    • Reports medication errors or reactions to medications immediately to the charge nurse, who, in turn, reports to the resident’s attending physician and completes the necessary documentation.
    • Checks with the charge nurse if there are any questions regarding any medication.
    • Records administration of the medication on resident’s medication administration record.
  • Assists residents in the activities of daily living including, but not limited to ambulation, bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, personal hygiene and activities.
  • Follow resident plan of care, assist residents with basic and specialized personal care under the monitoring and direction of a nurse, such as hydration, nutrition, elimination, exercise, activities, etc.
  • Report changes in resident condition, such as behavior, moods, activity level, appetite, patterns of elimination, vital signs, etc. to nurse.
  • Assist residents in psychosocial needs by using appropriate communications with residents, families, staff, and supervisors.
  • Provide for resident rights as defined in Resident Bill of Rights.
  • Provide clean and safe environment for resident and staff by complying with universal precautions, infection control standards, etc.
  • Responsible for initial cleaning of all bodily fluid spills such as urine, blood and feces.
  • Provide meal set-up and teardown daily.
  • Respond to each resident’s call light promptly. Provide for resident’s safety and needs by providing call light within resident reach, always, and performing all mechanical transfers of a resident with assistance.
  • Participate in admission, transfer and discharge procedures.
  • Participate in care planning conferences on assigned residents, as requested.
  • Assist in transporting residents to and from activities and programs.
  • Accurately documents required data in a timely manner using appropriate forms.
  • Identify safety hazards and emergency situations and initiates appropriate action immediately.
  • Maintain acceptable standards of personal hygiene and complies with department dress code.
  • Comply with CGP’s Code of Conduct in all aspects of job including participation in training as offered and understands responsibilities to report suspected violations.
  • Function under intense time pressure.
  • Get along with coworkers and work as a member of a team.
  • Required to fulfill mandate or overtime hours as requested.
  • Maintain strict standards of resident confidentiality.

  • Follow established performance standards and performs duties according to facility policies and procedures.
  • Report to work on time and work all scheduled days. On time is defined as being on your assigned work station at the top of the hour. First shift, 6:00am, Second shift, 2:00pm, Third shift, 10:00pm.
  • Reliable and consistent physical attendance, in compliance with our policies, is required.
  • Contributes to a positive, healthy and safe work environment.
  • Accepts change in a positive manner.
  • Attend in-service training and education sessions, as assigned to maintain eligible status on DCW Registry and continued employment.
  • Maintain current certification.
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduation from certified 75-hour Nursing Assistant Program.
  • Current status on Iowa Nurse Aide Registry.
  • Current Oral Medication Technician certification.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience.
  • Current CPR certification.
