Job Title: Residential Mentor
Reports to: Head of House
FLSA Status: Exempt
Department: Student Life
Position Summary: Responsible for monitoring and overseeing the day-to-day routines and schedules of our student-athletes and the residence halls promoting a safe, secure, and healthy environment for their development. This person will be assigned to a specific wing and will be the primary person responsible for parent communication for those student-athletes.
Position Responsibilities
  • Serve as a responsible, adult presence in the dorm. Actively supervise, engage with, and promote social growth and inclusion among students.
  • Oversee and maintain assigned wing and residence hall, including room checks and headcount.
  • Promote and maintaining a safe, secure, and healthy living environment
  • Enforce policies and procedures ensuring that the student-athlete code of conduct is being maintained
  • Participate and follow up on recreational, educational, and cultural programs for student-athletes
  • Design and implement residence hall programs each semester
  • Assist student-athletes with multicultural development, learning, character building, community development, and personal well-being
  • Work collaboratively to create and administer a Residential Life Curriculum.
  • Be aware of student-athletes’ daily schedules
  • Prioritize and manage multiple projects, diligently track and meet deadlines that affect student life
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures, and business ethic codes
  • Other duties as assigned
Operations
  • Monitor students in dorms and throughout campus, including wake up and curfew times
  • Perform regular walkthroughs and inspections of the residence halls working with maintenance, accommodations, and other departments to coordinate and direct upkeep requests
  • Coordinate with safety and security staff to ensure the security of students and residence halls
  • Assist with housing process including check in/out, early arrivals and opening/closing of residence halls
  • Attend and contribute to department meetings
  • Lead scheduled floor meetings
  • Attend and contribute to general planning for Academy and summer camp programs
  • Attend and participate staff trainings
Communication
  • Serve as primary contact for parents/guardians regarding dorm life by communicating openly and regularly with parents/guardians
  • Assist with orientation and acclimation of student-athletes to student life
  • Keep detailed notes and daily activity reports
  • Collaborate with departments including sports, academics, health services for student-athlete’s development
  • Communicate and follow up on conduct expectations of all student-athletes
  • Communicate and enforce appropriate disciplinary actions for violations
  • Collaborate and communicate emergency response and crisis management plans for various situations including weather, lockdown, student illness, injury, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Education, Child Psychology or related area
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Must possess good judgment and sensitivity relating to students of various backgrounds
  • Ability to handle challenging situations professionally and with sensitivity
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent guest service skills
  • Highly organized with the ability to juggle and prioritize multiple projects effectively
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced organization
  • A superior work ethic
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
  • At least 1 year experience working with students grades 6 through 12
  • Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology or related area
  • Experience in education, sports or related area
  • Experience as a collegiate athlete
  • Experience with residential life in a boarding school environment and/or summer camps
  • Experience in counseling, crisis response, and mediation
  • Experience in a high-pressure, academic/performance setting
  • First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Proficient with computers and computer systems
  • Bilingual
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to lift, move, push and pull equipment or boxes in excess of 40lbs.
  • Must be able to move around residence hall, including stairs
  • Ability to spend long periods of time on their feet, walking, standing, etc.
  • Ability to work dynamic schedule based on operational needs is required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
