Military Orders Writer / Subject Matter Expert (SME)

Summary:

Military Orders Writer / Subject Matter Expert (SME) is responsible for drafting blue force Operations Orders (OPORDERs) and other orders for the higher US Forces Command in support of the training audience. Using military doctrine, the Orders SME will draft green force mission orders in various formats to replicate specific regions that inform the main storyline. Products should provide depth within the scenario beyond the concept of the main story line and enough detail to keep the role players engaged with the training audience beyond superficial conversations. Products will include but are not limited to OPORDs, annexes, Fragmentary Order (FRAGORDs), Warning Order (WARNORDs), Execution Matrix (EXMATs), and supporting documents throughout all phases of the operation. This will be done for an average of 17 exercises per calendar year. When there is no training event to prepare for/execute, the Orders Writer provides day to day support on tasks such as assisting scenario design, role player integration, AARs, etc. The Orders Writer will participate in training development meetings, in-process reviews, working groups, etc. as directed by the Project Manager.

Other duties include but are not limited to: attend unit coordination meetings, brief unit leadership as necessary, assist unit cadre, and assistance to the MTC during simulation execution.

Responsibilities:

  • Research current Army and applicable foreign military doctrine and adjust orders products as necessary to represent US or foreign military forces
  • Assist Scenario Development with production/creation of scenario products
  • Brief leadership on the status of orders development timelines
  • During exercises, prepare dynamic FRAGORDs as necessary and provide feedback to TAFF and AAR Facilitators
  • During exercise preparations and execution, respond to orders RFIs
  • Capture feedback for use in hotwashes, AARs and take-home packages
  • Participate in scenario rehearsals with Role Players (RPs) and RP Managers (RPMs) prior to mission execution
  • Other duties as required

Minimum Qualifications:

  • SECRET Clearance
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience of planning at the Corp or Division level and a minimum of 2 years as an BN or higher Operations Officer or assistant Operations Officer.
  • Effective multi-tasking skills, and the ability to work cooperatively with others in a dynamic environment
  • Willing to travel up to 40% of the time (CONUS)
  • Competent with Microsoft Office (Word/PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communication skills and comfortable engaging senior US military personnel
  • Must maintain current driver's license
  • At least two (2) years of military or civilian simulation experience commensurate with management of all aspects of this position description.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited institution
  • Extensive knowledge of Army Doctrine (Brigade level and below); experience on a battalion or brigade level staff
  • Completion of ILE/CGSC/SLC
  • Familiar with the mission of the 3-353rd BN
  • Recent deployment experience
  • Transition Team Experience (Europe, Middle East, North Africa)
