Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Network Administrator, the Network Technician will perform systems administration and maintenance and perform a variety of complex professional and technical duties related to the installation and maintenance of MWCD computer network and communications hardware and software systems including network and application servers, Routers, Firewalls, LAN, WAN, NAS, Wireless Access Points, Phone Systems, Camera systems, in addition to Mobile Devices, and PC workstations in a Microsoft Technology environment. Assists in areas including, but not limited to, user management, equipment management, and asset tracking in support of the Information Technology Operations Policies. Assists other IT staff in support of MWCD Information Technology projects. Assists with configuration and installation of network and internet security, and the configuration and installation of all network software packages used by the MWCD. Assists in areas including, but not limited to, IT disaster backup and recovery systems.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists Network Administrator with management and supervision of all computer network functions for the MWCD. Ensures all networks are operating at maximum efficiency with proper security. This also includes telecommunications connections.
  • Assists with ongoing maintenance of critical network system and component upgrades.
  • Assists with MWCD phone systems, cabling and wiring, the operation, maintenance and control of the telephone system. This includes all facets of software, hardware, support, and changes related to systems including IP connections, mobile app support, and updating of voicemail and auto-attendant systems.
  • Provides Level-Two IT Services support for MWCD end-users.
  • Evaluates end user needs and recommends appropriate equipment and software configurations. Preserves system integrity for all computers within the MWCD.
  • Assists with management of wireless connectivity for MWCD.
  • Installation of software for Remote Monitoring Management (RMM), including desktop maintenance, management, and software update delivery systems.
  • Create installation packages and Scripted Image deployments utilizing Imaging Server.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation describing the LAN's layout and operational considerations.
  • Installation of new network hardware, PC computer hardware and software systems. Investigates and resolves routine hardware and communications problems.
  • Analyzes system or application usage and plans for growth or increases in network capacity.
  • Provide technical support for data and telephone communications network infrastructure and respond to inquiries from staff, service providers, and vendors.
  • Understands and uses PC computers, including peripheral devices; understands and uses windows operating system; performs system administrative duties; installs operating system, and application system software.
  • Practices network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
  • Provides training to employees in the use of telephone and network communications.

Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related discipline and five (5) years of technical experience working with network infrastructure, servers and telecommunications is required; or any equivalent combination of experience and training/certifications which provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Microsoft, CCNA, Network+, or other Network related certifications preferred

Special requirements include:

  • Working knowledge of LAN and WAN topologies and architecture, and must be able to construct, operate and maintain LAN and WAN Networks utilizing TCP/IP.
  • Must have a working knowledge of VLANs.
  • Experience with VPN Client and Tunnel architecture.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of designated Cisco & IP platform or environment
  • Must be able to research and solve associated problems.
  • Must have a complete knowledge of network equipment such as switches, routers, and associated equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of Firewall Appliances and basic rules and security policy configuration.
  • Must have a working knowledge of IP Telephony and QOS service implementation for network-based phone systems.
  • Ability to model programs and systems to needs of users for desired results; understand and follow oral and written instructions; explain technical material in layman terms.
  • Ability to make contact with other departments, requiring tact and good judgement.
  • Ability to analyze local and WAN network problems and solve problems with efficient results.
  • Ability to train users on network concepts and methodologies as well as specific application utilization and configuration.
  • Ability to interface with technical personnel to discuss technical issues pertaining to problems, purchases, or technical specifications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, security, and integrity of data and information.
  • Understanding of scripting.
  • Experience with Cloud Networking computing and fundamentals.
  • Experience with Fiber Optic Cabling would be preferred.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies

Other Requirements:
Must have a valid driver’s license. Must be insurable by MWCD fleet insurance. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Must possess solid written and oral communication skills. Weekend, evening and/or overtime work is required as necessary.
